Nikon D90 problems........

Hi,

Am new to this forum so hope this is in the right place.

Did do a search but couldn't find anything similar (hoping I put in the right search criteria :cuckoo:)

I have a Nikon D90 bought Nov 2009 with 18-105 VR lens.

I am relatively new to proper photography although have had an 35mm SLR in the past but had a one chance opportunity to buy a camera like this and took it!

I love the camera to bits, almost everything about it!!

Problem is....... I have been experiencing the problems that I have seen many other experienced...... Err in the top display, CHA, and F--- in the top display and they are getting worse! I have spoken to Nikon and they have said to send it in to repair.

Thing is I went to France yesterday and while there some complete idiot knocked it :bang: and (although in a bag) it landed on the lens from probably just under a foot off the floor :bang:. I had a filter on the front and that was broken but the lens looks ok! As far as I am concerned I should have beaten him unconcious with the camera but that would not have made the camera any better! :bang: I have taken a few pictures since and it seems to function ok should I be worried about this?

I love the camera and as above was a one off chance to buy and I am pretty sure I will never have the money to buy it again! :'( I have also started a photography course that while I don't have as much time as I want I really enjoy so just not sure if I should try and get the lens replaced through the extra insurance I got with it?

Sorry so long what are peoples thoughts?

Many thanks

have you tried a different SDHC Card - just might be a card error. If not get it repaired its a great camera, and generally problem free, think you have been unlucky

You get an error code when the lens to camera contacts get dirty or do not make good contact, simple solution is to release and re-seat the lens to the body.

You can clean the contacts with a pencil eraser, being careful not to fill the camera or lens with bits.

Sometimes it is the retractable pins on the lens not quite making perfect contact, the release re-seat option usually sorts this.

Some lenses are more prone to this than others.

thanks for your replies.

I have released and reconnected the lens a few times to try that as Nikon said one of the errors is related to lens connection to camera but no different.

I have also drived a different SDHC card from a different manufacturer but still got all of the errors with also trying the lens reconnect thing to see if it made a difference!

MAkes me wonder if I am jinxed I had a VW Passat (again generally relaible car from what I am told) and it was a bucket of rubbish but fantastic to drive!!!

I will continue with the repair option as I do love the camera but just concered as have seen the odd post about people having them repaired and still having problems! :help:

My father-in-law-to-be has the same camera and has not had problems but I have done more pictures in 1 year than he has in 2+ years! It is just so nice to use :)

The dissapointment is spending £700+ an a near professional camera have having so many issues within a short period when apart from the idiot in France I have always been super carfeul with it!!! :bang:

why do you need our thoughts when "I have spoken to Nikon and they have said to send it in to repair."

Confused..

Maybe I'm going out on a limb here but maybe do what Nikon said?

I think the OP was just trying to find out if anyone knows of a quicker / easier fix for the problem he's having Andy, rather than send it to Nikon for a repair that may/may not work.

With so many experienced people on here, our knowledge base when it comes to problems and issues is huge.

i have experienced both problems,

1, F---. as mentioned above clean the contacts, but i still get it now and again on my 35mm f1.8. giving the len a little twist on the body clears it.

2, CHA. had it twice, and i have had to format the card in camera to clear it. if i format the card on my pc it does this.

Thanks again.

Yes puddleduck I was probably not clear, sorry.

Part of it was that as justinitus said that I wanted to see if there was a quicker solution that didn't involve sending the camera to Nikon risking damage in the post / delivery, damage whislt repairing, and the problem not being resolved.

Also, is there any views / comments re the fact that the idiot in France (yes I am still very angry about it!!! :bang:) knocked it and it broke the filter on the lens could there be any damage to the lens?

thanks
