Hi everyone.

I have a nikon d300 and it is excellent, My other half has several reptiles and i'm now looking at taking some close up shots of them.

Can anyone recommend a good macro lens for this purpose.

Many thanks in advance

I used to use the Sigma 105mm & the sigma 150mm both excellent IQ, the 105mm is a lot lighter and easier to hand hold but the 150mm gives you a bigger working distance.

the nikon 105mm vr would be my choice.... and also some kenko marco tubes

Personally i don't think there's that much it it for IQ and the VR doesn't work for macro so i'd use the money saved buying the sigma and put it towards getting some macro flash's / off camera flash.

Personally I don't think you can go wrong with an older manual focus macro - very cheap and they are all optically excellent.

Consider picking up a Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 AI-S, these are dirt cheap (I picked up my two for under £50 a piece) and they are SUPERB. The floating element also makes it really good for distant objects.

If you want AF then in order of preference:

1) Sigma 150mm
2) Tamron 90mm
3) Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AF-D
4) Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR

I put the VR last as VR is pointless for macros, and the VR re-spin is not as good optically as the lens it replaced (although it has better bokeh its less sharp with more CA) or as good any of the 3 above it in my list IMHO (and I have used them all)

Thanks to all. I'm gonna have a go with the Sigma MACRO 105mm F2.8 EX DG.

Thanks again

It's hard to buy a bad macro lens in my experience but I've used the sigma and nikon 105mm and the sigma 150mm. The 150mm is the sharpest but the extra weight means you need a tripod to get the best from it. The 105mm's are much better if you are just planning to go for a wildlife walk and shoot anything you see on the way.

Thanks to rpcrowe for the above I gotta admit I'm really tempted by this Tamron one

Anyone else with any experience with it?

If I was replacing my Nikkor 105VR with something cheaper it would be the Tamron 90mm.

The other option is the previous Nikkor 105mm Macro, without VR.
