Nikon nifty fifty advice please

I am saving up to get myself a 50mm 1.8 lens for my Nikon D60. When I have looked at prices there seems to be a lot of difference. Is this because there are different models? If so can someone advise me which is the best for my camera.

im after the same lens :)

the 1.4 is faster and around the £270 mark...

the manual 1.8 is under £100 ....

correct me if im wrong TP.... but thats been my few days dilemma :lol:

personally im going for th 1.4 and thanking work for the overtime :lol:

the 50 1.8 won't autofocus on your d60 - sorry if you were already aware.

Well be cautious - if you want it to autofocus on the D60 you'll need to get the AF-S 1.4. The AF-D 1.4 and 1.8 are screw-driven and will only focus manually.
 
Options for a nifty fifty are:

AF 50mm f/1.8D - circa £100
AF 50mm f/1.4 - circa £230
AFS 50mm f/1.4G - circa £280

The only one that will auto focus on the D60 is the last one, the AFS
 
The regular 'nifty' is the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF

but be aware that it wont autofocus on your d60

you'll need an AF-S lens for autofocus on the d60.

HAHA, thats what i get for half watching the telly! beaten by a mile and a half

yep - im just majorly struggling where to get one from? and not be ripped off :)

seen one in america that works out at £250.... with a 5 year warranty but would rather get one from the UK :lol:
 
Further to my idea about using the AIS 50mm f/1.8 e, it does not work on the D40x which means it probably will not work on the D60. Shame really as you can pick them up for £20-25 and they are as manual focus as the AF 50mm f/1.8D......

No Nikon warranty if bought in USA. Give STUART at DIGITAL DEPOT a ring www.digitaldepot.co.uk he gives a special price to TP members and gave me the best price I could find when I bought that very lens.

option 2

Sell D60 for £250 add £200. Buy D200 for £450 buy £80 AF50mm f/1.8 and have AF - total outlay £280

pennies more and you still get AF on 50mm plus a MUCH better camera that will work with all manner of cheap lenses....

Just a thought.

or for that price that cam comes with standard lens?

i like my camera :( :lol:

It works out the same BUT the D200 is a FAR better camera than the D60. You can then buy any of the other AF lenses without worrying about the "S" bit. It was just an option to place on the table. If you get the AFS 50mm f1.4 you will be very pleased it is a great lens.
 
Didn't want to open a new thread so sorry to intrude, but which nifty 50 auto focuses on the 30D?

Probably a Canon one ;)

Canons work differently. No Canon cameras have a focus motor they are all in the lens so it should be a matter of either the lens AFs or not.

Just tried this again and it works in MANUAL ie you need to focus it yourself, set the aperture yourself and set the shutter speed yourself !!!

So nifty fifty on a budget (£20-£30). On ebay you can get a Nikon EM or similar with AI-S 50mm f/1.8e for £40

butt do i sell the camera - body only? as i lufs my lens :( and how much are the d200's?

in all honesty if i do it all over again id buy a canon :lol: much more ranges of lenses :p

It was an idea.... Yes if you sell the body only and buy a D200 body only. There is a D200 in the for sale section for about £450 ish at the moment..... The D200 is easier to use as all the often used functions are much more easily accessible. I am NOT pushing this idea it was just one to ponder over.....

This argument does have some merit actually. The D200 is worth it for the clearer viewfinder alone!

oh absolutely - i completly see your point :)

IF i could sell this for £250 it would be a possibility. But if im honest right now i would just stick with this one then in anyear or two anyhow i will definately be upgrading.

i DO appreciate the thoughts/ideas though :)

Thank you so much for all the replies. I am on a tight budget as I just have a pension. I must admit it would be a pain to have to do manual focus as I am not very good at that ( my eyes arent great). However I will look at getting one of the cheaper 1.8 lenses you have mentioned and at least then if I want to get a blurred backgound I will be able to. It would save me a lot of pp.

Only useful if you're going to buy all of them...

I'd go the route Cowasaki suggested - sell your camera, then with that money plus a little bit more, buy a D200 and get access to all those lovely (cheaper) 2nd-hand lenses that are available...

There are buyers that want a body only; ones that want a lens to get started with; and others that want several lenses, a flash etc., all in a bag. Bodies only have recently sold for £155-£225 on eBay, and then there are the fees to deduct...

just an aside
i used, then sold - stupid:bonk: - a Nikon 35mm 1.8 AF-S
a lovely little lens and going for about £140

...unless the 50mm range is vital, it's worth a look......:thinking:

Very much so! Nikon launched the AFS 35mm f/1.8 specifically for the DX format BECAUSE of the multiplication factor of the DX format so effectively the 35mm on a DX behaves like a 50mm on a FX. 50mm was the standard lens on most film cameras for a reason !

As you say your after the nice blurred background, not the 50mm focal length in particular, seriously consider this option. You also mention that the manual focus could be a bit of a problem, another reason to consider this lens.

When your D60 focuses on Auto do you get a little green light in the viewfinder? Bottom Left?

If you do then when you focus the AF 50mm 1.8 manually you get the same green light showing when the subject is in focus. It can help :)

I've got a 50mm 1.8 manual on a Nikon D40 and yes the green light does work quite well

The only thing that fooled me when I first got it was the really narrow DOF when it's wide open. I'd suggest if you do get it, then start with a smaller aperture to get used to it and then open it up

Nice and sharp and really good as a portrait lens, not had it out and about yet, accept if you have poor eyesight it might be a pain, but I think for me as a noob, using a manual prime has helped me to take some better pics

I've been following a used 50 1.8 on eBay ..."here"........and the silly bidders are up to £68 + 7 pp ....so why dont they buy new ...:thinking:

less risk dealing AWAY from eBay too.
