Yes
I've been having a look at various lenses and was wondering about pancake lenses, Ie, really small lenses. I quite fancy getting me hands on one of these pref in the 50mm region. I know there is a 50mm Series E Nikor out there, but I was wondering if anyone is aware of any REALLY small lenses for Nikon cameras?

The Series E (the one without the silver focus ring) is the nearest to a pancake.

There is also the Nikkor 45mm f/2.8 P lens (silly expensive)

The Voightlander 40mm f/2 is also very pancake-y, lovely little lens, but again you are looking at around £200 for one.

All of them are manual focus - the cheapest and lightest is the 50mm Series E.

You should really be buying Pentax.

I've been thinking about these recently - to pair with my FM2n.

The three that I've been looking at are:
Nikon 45mm f/2.8 GN
Nikon 45mm f/2.8 P
Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2

I've ranked those from worst to best. The P is an updated version of the GN.

I'd plump for the voigtlander if cost wasn't an issue. If you just want one for the novelty/portability go for the GN. The P is a good compromise.

I'm just looking for something small and compitent. The only AF lens that I got with ma camera is a pretty large SIgma DC 18-200mm3.5-6.3F, which is fine, but the lens is REALLY big and a bit cumbersome for just lugging around the place. I have to say that I very rarely use the zoom on this lens. It was more a sort of thought experiment really :) I'm going to get a beating if I spend any more money on the camera, and I'm still messing around indoors with the camera. Once the weather improves a bit I'll start going o to the highlands for some pictures, and get a better idea of what I'm needing.

The Nikor 1.4 50mm is pretty small and is only a little larger than a pentax 50mm, but I'm not so sure about the 1.8.

I was thinking more of the Pentax DA 70mm, 40mm and 21mm, plus some of the bodies are small and weatherproofed. DA 15mm and 30mm are in the works.

Most lenses will be smaller than an 18-200. If you still want to retain AF, you won't get much smaller than the short primes.

It all depends on how small you need to go. I'd head down to a camera store that keeps the lenses in stock for you to have a look at.

Cracking idea!. I know it might sound stupid to say that, but I hadn't really thought of going to a a camera shop. lol. Its just a shame that there aren't any good second hand shops (and charity shops)in aberdeen for lenses on the cheap, so it'll have to be Jessops if they have any.

Nikon E Series lens are sort of the only pancake's

Here is a link to some info about them - http://www.mir.SPAM/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/emfgfg20/eserieslenses/index.htm

Quite a few people say that they are "cheap" Nikon basic lenses, smaller less elements in them. I've got a 50mm on my FM2n and it's such a nice lens to be fair. I've been looking into a 28mm E lens as well mainly cos it's smaller than the normal 28mm

The 85mm f1.8 is smaller than anything I've seen in recent years...71.5x58.5mm totally small weirdness!

I've wanted a Pancake lens for some time. Would love the Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2 and a Nikon D40 or similar for a really light and small DSLR. :)

to give you an idea of the e series

My god, they are massive

Now this is a pancake lens ....
