Nikon SB700 discharging when off..?

I bought a S/H SB700 from the classifieds a few months ago and as I've hardly ever used it have only just noticed that it seems to drain batteries from fully charged to too-flat-to-flash in 2-3 days.

Any other owners got the same problem - is it normal or should I get it checked out ?
My previous flashguns (Canon, Metz, Olympus) have never done this so I am fearing the worst but it would be good to know what other owners have got to say, and where might be a good place to send it, assuming a Nikon repair may be a lot more expensive..?
 
I never store the flash with the batteries in, so I can't help I'm afraid.
Doesn't sound right to me though.

The commercially available cell with the shortest shelf charged life
(lowest inner resistance) is/was the NiCad. A great cell that had a
full charge shelf life of a month!

I think something is wrong in your situation or perception of it!
 
Thanks all. I don't often store the flash with batteries in, but am happy to keep them in over a couple of days. Closer examination has revealed a few white traces on one of the terminals that look like a battery has leaked at some stage...(Not one of mine !)

Sooo, anyone got any suggestions who to send it to ?

@stevewestern Funny that I should only have commented on this the other day. I am just in the middling of putting my bag together for a shoot later on and noticed one of my SB-700's had been left switched on in my gear cupboard since the last time it was used and it's been at least a week since it was last used and it still had power.
