Hi all,

I'm interested in getting slightly longer reach with my 70-300 VR. I love the lens and I can't justify swapping it in already and spending lots more on a 400...

Would the TC-14 work on the 70-300 VR? Are there any issues with regards the computability of the two. Am I right in thinking I would get 420mm with two more stops of aperture?

Looking forward to your replies.

Dave

Not tried the Nikon TC on that lens but tried the sigma version, AF speed was awful and the lens kept hunting

not worth putting the two together IMO

Not normally. but I have a "magic" one :)

Would the performance be different on the 70-300 though? I'd love the extra reach.

TBH while AF works and VR still works, its not brilliant.

The lens just isn't designed to take a TC. Normally you put a TC on something like a 70-200 VR or a 300mm f/4 for example.

Actually normally you can't even fit the TC-14E to the 70-300 VR anyhow - I have a "magic" one though, so its a moot point really :)

You could buy an 80-400,if you could find one for sale.....:whistling:

Just for giggles, here is the 70-300 VR with the 1.4x TC - just shot.

Its really 450mm f/8 @ 300mm - TC does not report correct EXIF.

Its OK for web shots, but doesn't bear up at 100% viewing.

I have seen yours, don't worry :) I would really need to shift my 70-300 first :(

Thank you for posting the pic. Whilst it looks quite sharp, I think I'm better off putting my money towards a dedicated zoom lens

If you want 400mm+, the best you can do without spending thousands is the Nikkor 300mm f/4 AF-S with a 1.4x TC. IQ is stunning. It trouces the 70-200 VR with a TC, trouces the 80-400 VR / 80-400 OS and blows the doors of any of the Sigma 50/150-500 lenses.

The only thing better than a Nikon 300mm f/4 is a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 :)

 appreciate that. Certainly given me some food for though.

I've always wondered about the 80-400mm Nikon....haven't read too many favourable things about it tbh. One thing I have read (maybe Andy can add some further info) is that Nikon are/were looking to replace it.

Andy is correct, being honest, the 80-400 is not a fast focussing lens, even on a D300,gawd knows what it would be like on a D40x.It is a very versatile zoom lens, but fast? No,definately not.

Probably done myself out of a sale there, but it is an honest opinion.

A lot of people knock it though I wonder if they have used one,I like mine because it is a smallish, lightish versatile zoom,if you want AF speed,go for a prime.

All I can say about that is "indeed" and it shouldn't be too long. It was being tested last year alongside the D3X.

I was already expecting it already (early Q1) - two more lenses are coming this year. I'm 90% sure the replacement will be one of them.

The 70-300 VR was delayed nearly a year after announcement, so I imagine Nikon want to get it right, and tend to keep things a lot tighter (the 35mm f/1.8 came out of nowwhere)

Assuming the D400 is out by July.. well not long I think.

I would certainly prefer your honesty, perhaps not so beneficial to you but...

Having done a quick trawl through the recent for sale threads, the 300s come up now and then though the majority aren't AF-S. Definitely can't afford to go for it new so will stick with what I've got for the time being and see how it goes. For the money I spent, I'm very impressed with the 70-300

Thanks all for the info.

Understood. :)

That's why I've always wondered about it. I'm half-thinking that the people who have 'commented' about the lens want a one-size fits all lens with the IQ and speed of the higher grade Nikon lenses (a bit like the 18-200mm).

The 80-400 VR gets a lot of flack but its not bad optically.

If you want 400mm its a much better choice than a 70-300 VR with a TC.

Personally I preferred the Sigma 80-400 OS actually though.

300mm 2.8 + 1.4 TC for the win, it is a stunning combo :)

In a thread titled TC and 70-300 , do you not think that your "for the win" combo maybe slightly out of the ops reach financially?

The op "Might" be lucky on the lotto this week ;), you just never know what might happen :)
