hi all... I'm posting on behalf of a friend, who is looking to upgrade his D40x... primarily as he wants something which is better in lowlight (mainly takes event photography/indoor photography).

he currently has a D40x, had it for about 2 years. he's thinking of upgrading to either D90, secondhand d300, secondhand d200... so that's an idea of his budget.

what would people recommend? personally i upgraded recently from a D60 to a D90 and couldn't believe the jump in difference, it's pretty impressive. My concern is that going from a D40x to a D300 might be quite a jump?

his concern is that he doesn't want to buy something now which he might find himself wanting to upgrade to in another 12/18 months, so is edging towards the D300. plus I don't think he wants the same camera as me, so no D90 ;)

any thoughts gratefully received!

I too am upgrading from a D40x (have put it up for sale here) and am going to get a D90.

It's got stunning reviews and am more than happy to go for that than pay extra dollar for a D300

I posted this link on a similar thread the other day.

It's worth a read - and it is still worth considering what you/he are upgrading for as your friend might benefit from faster glass rather than a new body to photograph in low light conditions?

thanks so far chaps... have found a few interesting comments in similar threadds too :)

I have recently upgraded from a D40 to a D300 - it is a massive jump not just in physical size and weight but in what it will do. It feels so much more comfortable to use, the low light capability has blown me away compared to the D40 and it seems to be just a bit easier to use in terms of menu functionality and buttons.

What you/ he needs to think about is although the D90 will probably do what is needed will he still be looking to upgrade to the D300/s in 12 months time - if so then better make the big jump now rather than loose money on a D90

HTH

Don't get the D200 if he wants to do indoor photography without a flash. Outdoors, great. A D90 has the same sensor as a D300 so I would recommend one of those. As you have a D90 then a used D300 is what he should be aiming at. With a fast lens 35 or 50/1.4 he should be able to get good indoor no flash shots.

Has he looked at getting a fast lens like a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 or Nikon 35mm f/1.8?

A lens upgrade will give far more "stops" if he using a kit lens than a body upgrade.

Glass first - always, especially if just on kit stuff (opening post dooesn't say)

D200 is not great in low light. The D300 is fine but I find that my old D90 was better at higher ISO. I would chose a D300 most of the time over a D90 though.

Have you considered the Fuji s5 Pro......
