Nikon walkabout lens?

Ok im on a real tight budget here and am after a good walkabout lens for a D700.

Ive been looking at the Nikon 28-200 3.5-5.6 and can get one reasonably cheap off the bay , sinceita the silver model.i think, but the other makers versions, sigma and tamron, are cheaper still.

Anyone have any experience of these.
 
I had a D700 and managed to pick up a Nikon AF-D 35-70 f2.8 off eBay for £158

It was spectacular.

I'd highly recommend trying to find a good one of these.

I'm M43 now but still miss my D700 setup.
 
28-105 AF-D? I used one on a D700 and found it a good combo. Around the £100 mark seems to be the going rate these days.
 
I can second the 35-70 2.8 being brilliant, I just guess it’ll depend on budget if you can get a good one. Also, while it is good, the zoom range isn’t exactly massive so if you’re after something in the 28-200 range it’s not really going to compare unfortunately!
 
Thanks for the ideas chaps. I do want something with a little more zoom though. I was just wondering what the lenses from other brands were like.
 
28-105 is a good lens, and enormously better than the (optically terrible, in the example I had) Nikon 28-200. If you must have a superzoom then look for the Sigma 28-200 DL Hyperzoom Macro Asperical IF - I've got 2, 1 for Sony & 1 for Nikon, and it's probably the best of the older superzooms. I also have a 28-200 compact hyperzoom that's not as sharp (better than the Nikon though) which is a lot smaller and lighter that I'd let go for £35 posted - if you're interested then stick an ad in the wanted section and PM me with a link.
 
Personally I use the 24-120 F4 as a walkabout/travel lens. Really very impressed with the quality!
 
I've got the Canon equivalent (24-105 f4 l) and it's on the camera most of the time. I photograph as a hobby so don't need it to do anything brilliantly, just want it to cover most eventualities/opportunities that I'll come across when out with the camera.

Don't agree with this at all. Many of the Sigma Art lenses surpass Nikon lenses, as a manufacturer they've really got their act together. I'm using a Sigma 24-105f4 on my D850 which really puts lenses to the test and it's excellent..... I did own the Nikon 24-120F4 before getting the D850 and it was decent, it just doesn't cut it on the D850 so I swapped it for the Sigma, definitely a good decision.

Another vote for the 24-120 f/4, although it may be over budget. The older, variable aperture version isn't nearly as good and TBH, I wouldn't have one.
 
I have had a number of walkabout lenses over the decades For Nikon FX & Film I still own the following Nikon AFS 28-300mm VR,Tamron 28-300mm VC, Tokina 24-200mm, Nikon AF28-200mm g lens, plus a few others if you want a small lightweight and optically stunning little lens the Nikon 28-200mm f3.5/5.6 should fit the bill nicely.
If weight and price isn't a issue get the superb AFS-VR 28-300mm f3.5/5.6 it rarely comes off my D810 these days.
Don't rule out the Nikon AFS 24-120mm VR 3.5/5.6 I had two of these until recent and my friend persuaded me to part with one. Very underrated lens that has come in for a lot of uncalled for criticism IMO I shot thousands of frames with mine in the studio weddings and general outings as a walk about lens over the years. And they can be picked up at bargain prices these days ! In fact was sold with the D700 at a kit.
