Nikon - What is the difference between "VR" and "VR II"?

Yes
I see many listings in the classified that refer to VRII. In particular those for the 18-200 mm lens that has two versions (that I will call v1 and v2) and I'm never sure whether the listing is for a v1 or v2 lens. Nikon don't help by referring to the v2 lens as the "AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II"; see here. So it's not the fault of the people posting the listings ... it's down to Nikon and their confusing naming conventions (I could go on ... ).

However, if you look at this link you can see that even the v1 lens has "Enhanced Vibration Reduction (VRII)"!

If you want to know the difference between VR and VRII have a look here.

Well, that's my rant over ... I'm going back into hibernation until it thaws down South.

Ignore me ... I must learn to read the post properly. I saw 18-200 and thought 70-200 ... sorry

Actually on Nikon's web site they shown both versions of the 70-200 and clearly mark one as "VR" and the other "VRII". See links below:

You will see they also altered the order of the various descriptor codes.

Hope that helps :)

I'm pretty sure the 2 versions are identical apart from the newer version (VR II) having a 'lock switch' on the barrel just front of the other switches.

If you can't see the switch the the old version has VR in red on the top of the lens and the newer has the VR in gold.

I am sure you are right about the lock switch being the only difference. The original VR lens had 2nd generation VR ( VRII?)
Looks like a marketing ploy to get more money off folk. I had the original VR lens and upgraded it to VRII by judicious placement of a rubber O ring to stop lens creep!
