Nikon Z* mirrorless

unfortunately, Settle isn't within walking distance of Wallsden/Todmorden and it was a complete lottery which Northern trains were running (my friend was delayed over 5 hours on the short commute from Leeds last Wednesday). Perhaps next time!

The trains probably weren't running, due to a shortage of drivers on the line.

I had heard that some drivers were snowed in and couldn't report for work even if they'd wanted to....

Awwww :(

After a measly 300,000 ish images, with well over 1,000 of them being 30 seconds or longer, one of my D6iis has developed 2 hot-pixels :(

So that's 2 more things to have to erase in addition to my 'pet' dust-bunnies :D

I've acquired a Z6 iii. Paired it with the Tammy 28-75.
Want to keep my Zf for Manual Lenses.
Not yet formed an opinion about the Z6 iii
Only used it once so far.

anyway, no surprises about how it performs.

Looks a solid option Trev. I must admit I’ve thought about swapping my Zf for a III but it’s not really needed. Think I’d rather wait and pick up a Z8.

I like the tech the Zf has but starting to favour the controls more of the 6, 7, 8 given what I mainly shoot.

That is exactly why I bought mine, someone on Reddit mentioned the Zf, until then I had no idea electronic focus confirmation on vintage glass was possible or that the camera even existed. If you add in Focus shift for Macro, then my GAS was all consuming :)
I'm expecting delivery today, so that is Sat booked out for me

Enjoy it. It’s every bit as good as reviews suggest.

It is a beautiful camera. Not too heavy, does feel unbalanced with some of my heavier vintage glass, especially my Pentax 135mm F2,5, but so did my Sony, so Im not fussed.
Im going to try my wrist strap before I get a grip, as it doesn't seem as bad as everyone suggested.
MF electronic focus confirmation has me smiling as it works just like I hoped.
Other than that, I feel lost, everything is in a different place and the menu will take a bit of getting used to.
I'm spending the day watching setup videos and playing around, enjoying myself immensely

I have the Smallrig grip on my Zf and it makes the camera feel very much better.

Funnily enough I have the Smallrig grip on mine an I don’t like it much at all. :ROFLMAO:
I have actually found a blue grip, but at £60 it is pricey so can wait until next month,

Amazon Blue Grip

No idea if it is any good. I have a Lexar silver SD card and a Lexar gold micro SD card so that the speeds match, I'm not sure whether to have the micro Sd card as backup or just dump the JPEG's onto it.
Amazon are 1 stop away now for my screen adapter and M42->FE adapter, will take it out for a spin once it starts to get a bit darker, Im going to use an old 58mm F1.2 to really test the focus assist tools as my failure rate on the Sony was depressingly high at F1.2, so it will be a good first test

I use the Micro SD as backup. Too fiddly for regular in/out use.

I too use it for backups but save as Jpeg, only deleting them when I’m sure the raw files are safely backed up on the desktop machine.

I also use the MicroSD purely as backup (RAW) in the unlikely event of something going wrong and the card will stay in the camera. So far, I'm happy without a grip.

Same for me, micro SD card as a back up.

I’m not keen on additional grips on any camera to be fair, prefer the feel of the camera as it was made. :)

I believe Neweer do two types of grip - one which has a small thumb nubbin on the back which is supposed to work very well. Not tried it, so don’t know if it works well or not.

The reason I have a grip (Neewer standard) is to be able to carry the camera around in my hand (with the strap also wrapped around my wrist), and to further aid this I have fixed a small strip of gritty anti-slip tape where my fingers touch it.

Stephen, can you please let me know which tape you used.
EDIT I've looked in my sticky tape box, where it should have been, and plenty of places where it shouldn't be, but can't find it! Sorry.

Looking to buy the 70-200 f28 to go with my z6/z9 but looking at the price difference and weight against the 70-180 f28 don’t know which one to go for mostly for grand kids and fast moving dogs

Wish you’d stop it with these Voigtlander photos! Is it native mount or Leica?
Both my voigtlander are native.
Perfect for the Zf.

(have i talked you into one)?

Can't help I'm afraid, but do wonder why Nikon chose the 70-180 as the cheaper option instead of an F4 70-200

The Tamron built and Nikon customised 28-75 f2.8 and 70-180 f2.8 offer wide aperture, lower cost. lighter and smaller alternatives to the Nikon S 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200m f2.8 lenses. The 70-200mm f2.8 is a beast of a lens. The f2.8 lenses are perceived as more professional than f4 and the 180mm f2.8 prime lens is a bit of classic focal length for Nikon len, so good marketing.

And there is the option of the 24-200 f4-F6.3 lens which provides a partial alternative to a 70-200mm f4.

Using existing Tamron lenses probably allowed Nikon to more quickly fill out their lens range, when they were starting to build a comprehensive Z lens system

As an aside, these aren't simply rebadged Tamron lenses as they have extra weather sealing compared to the Tamron versions, use Nikon focussing motors and work with Nikon Teleconverters.

Ah, it was the Tamron link that I didn't know about, so they're (sort of) bringing the third party element in house. Must say I'm very pleased indeed with my pair of F4s...

Apparently Tamron make some lenses for several brand names, always have done. And, if you go back far enough, Nikon made lenses for Canon! And Cosina still make lenses for Zess.

Hehehe nice and incestuous then :)

The balance for Nikon is I suppose letting Nikon users take advantage of cheaper third party lenses while retaining stronger brand name control compared to DSLR times. And/or Thor's point too about ease and speed of expanding their range. Compared to other sectors Nikon do have quite an interesting relationship with their customer base don't they?

Yes, it's a good option for Nikon, lower cost lenses while still building a "Nikon" customer bases. It also fills gaps in the "Nikon" lens range that might send a customer to another.
make.

Nikon has always been an interesting relationship with its customers, and I've used them for 50 years now, Howevr, some might call it more irritating than interesting at times.

Anyone here tried the Viltrox 16mm f1.8 yet?
Yes, I had one but sold it as it wasn’t getting any use. The output was good, though, on the few shots I took with it. In fact, I listed it in this forum a few weeks ago but withdrew it due to a timewaster and sold it elsewhere. It’s a heavy lump, though.

It would be replacing my old Tamron G2 15-30. Nothing can be heavier than that, its an absolute brick of a lens :)

I thought it would be a substitute for rebuying the 15-30, but it wasn’t.

I only recently acquired the Tamron 15-30. I like it so much that I've actually been out with my Df more than the new Zf (or the previous Z6) over the past couple of months. Of course I could adapt with the FTZ but at the moment am enjoying keeping the two lens ranges separate. Certainly it's heavy but I actually like how it feels in the hand-- reassuringly solid. Still, from what I've seen of the Viltrox 16mm, the images are excellent.
