Nikon Z* mirrorless

I'm a season pass holder there and yes it is a very good track. Best get the waterproofs ready though for this weekend.
I'm very envious, I've only been there once for a track day (aside from Project Cars 2 :D)

Well I've finally pulled the plug on a Z 180-600 and off to Oulton Park to try it out at the BTCC meeting. I know it'll be a bit unfair comparing it to my 400mm f/2.8E FL but it's more to see if I can live with it as a lighter all day lens. I will report on my findings once I've tried it.
Just selling mine! I find it far to heavy compared to the 500pf I used to have, not sure why I actually part ex'd it against the 180-600?

Zoom is a good versatile lines but you can see & feel why it isn't an S lens

Changing to the 400 f4.5 & 1.4 TC.

I wonder if anyone in here can help me, I'd like to customise the controls somewhat on my Zf but I'm not sure if what I want to do is even possible. I think it is not.

First up, I'd like to disable the 'i' button on the back as I keep hitting it when I mean to hit the af button with my thumb. I must have had a camera in ther past that had af activation right where that i button is as my thumb just naturally goes there.

Next, I wonder if it'd be possible to have a quick and easy (and preferably tactile) way to change from back button focus to shutter button half press focus?
I should probably just set the camera to half press focus and just get used to it actually right?!

I don't think you can disable the i button.

I have my AF set up as in the video below: shutter button gives AF (wide area) on half press, and the "back button" overrides the shutter button to switch on tracking AF (with small area).

The menu item is now d19 (I think, well it is on my Zf).
Probably, a good point :)

I say probably, as there have been several upgrades to the Zf firmware, which has moved the menus around, and I can't remember where things are ;-(

Just been trying out my newly acquired 80-400 G lens on the Z8 , bit slower to AF than the 180-600 but a hell of a lot lighter . Not been out for a few days due to health issues so only garden tests but it’s a good one . I’ll see how it performs at bempton next week

I've just left the back button focus there just now (maybe I'll reassign that button at some point) and put af activation back on the shutter half press. Played about with it last night and I think I will get used to it pretty quick. I have plenty other cameras where shutter half press does that.

I don't really use tracking and stuff but that looks like a good set up if you do @myotis.

The value of the tracking for me, is that it's a step up from what I used to do with back button focussing and people.

In the past, I used the single point focus pointed at the person I wanted in focus, and then recomposed, with the focus locked in place.

Now, I do the same thing, but hold the back button in while recomposing, and the AF keeps the person I initially focussed on, in focus, even if they move.

But we all approach these things differently depending on exactly how we feel most comfortable working.

I had already ended up using AF pretty much as the video described, but it added a tweak to what I was doing that made things that bit better for me: I can't remember what it was now.

I have been staunch disable shutter button activated AF and only used BBF for years, but the combination set up as shown in the video has now become my "normal" setup for people and wildlife.

Unfortunately due to a ancient thumb injury I find it uncomfortable to use BBF so use shutter button 100% of the time ,pretty sure I don’t lose anything by it you just have to perfect the light touch work ethos

The TC is what most want, its been a huge hit with the 400 and 600 model, its a unique feature only available with Nikon, having to remove the lens, putting on a TC does not seem much but in wildlife photography it is a missed shot, even for sports photographers I feel will want that TC.
So much so, that it's rumoured that Canon are going to replace their 400/600 primes already with models with inbuilt TC's

I do wish Nikon would release a 10-20mm zoom for the DX bodies. I mostly use a ZFC at present with a 14-30. I'm dallying with the replacing the 14-30 with the 12-28 DX VR but gaining only a small amount of width vs giving up a lens I really like, and one which will be useful should I decide to return to FF in the future, is causing me to pause for thought. Anyone else got both lenses and use them on a DX body? Thoughts? Either lens will be used almost exclusively outdoors in light conditions for landscape shots, so neither a constant aperture or VR are overly important.

Ooops, fingers slipped…

Just ordered the 7artisans AF 135mm f/1.8 MAX Full Frame, be here tomorrow

I had a bit of a lucky escape with my Z8 plus 80-400G... Been using it on and off at the weekends and so it was left on the floor of my study until Sunday when I put the camera and lens safely away. Monday, our roofers arrive to replace our tiles and they start at the back of the house, no tiles or insulation above my study. Because rain was not forecast no tarps were put over the bare roof (only plywood), rain did arrive early evening and it did not trouble us. Then at 4am we were woken to lightning and thunder, followed by a storm, followed not long after by sound of dripping inside - first the main bathroom, then my study (floor was inundated) and down into the kitchen. If I had left the Z8 where it was a day before, then oops.... Kitchen bore the brunt.

Dehumidifiers proven to be a worthwhile purchase.

What was it that made you choose it over the Viltrox?
I had the viltrox when I had Sony as it was just too heavy for me, wrist issue. The 7artisans is 25% lighter and a fair bit cheaper. It arrived today, lovely piece of glass, when it cools down a little and I can get ootside, I’ll let you know more.
