Nion 135 f/2 vs Canon 135 f/2

I don't know how sharp the Canon version is, but the Nikon one is good at f/2.0 with a hint of dreamy-ness. Its not super sharp, but I think for what you shoot the dreamy-ness would be nice for portraits.

Its worth noting that these often come out of the factory with the DC ring incorrectly calibrated - thus it may have front or backfocus with the DC ring in neutral. AF fine tune doesn't work around the issue.

The problem is only really apparent wide open.

And you know me I shoot wide open :), So how do I get around this problem then? Buy used?

You could buy used and ask for a wide open sample at a typical shooting distance I guess....

Luke...to make things easier swap to Canon ;)
Good luck with getting one :) if Nikon one is as good as Canon one, cant wait for your shots taken with it :ok:

The 135/2 is a very, very nice lens. But it's a niche one and not as flexible as a 70-200. Something to think about.

Don't know about the Nikon, but here are some F/2.0 samples from the Canon 135L:

My god I miss that lens :'(

I tend to agree with the 70-200 VR choice (in any ideal world where money is no object) - for a zoom the 70-200 VR has excellent bokeh and despite what a few potty 400% corner viewing pixel peepers would have you believe, its a stunner performance on the D700.

Its very sharp wide open too. I rarely take mine over f/3.2.

Quck question off topic- what is the equivilent of 70mm on a crop sensor? I just put my 24-70 on my D300.

It brings us back to the argument about FF and crop... 70mm is still 70mm it's just that it has trimmed a bit off all round the picture (around the smaller sensor) so the FOV is different not the actual focal length, so it appears as if 105mm - but don't want to go OT.
