I had a second shooter lined up nicely till the camera they were gunna use was sold .... grrrr now i am in blind panic mode altho i know can do decent job from every vantage point around this .. wanted some from in front of them side etc etc and now no chance... it would be silly to try.:bang::bang::bang:

okaly dokaly you guys are on the ... sucks to be you fence

If it's so small and the layout so inconvenient that you have to be prominant to the point of feeling like you're intruding then I'd be raising your concerns to the bride and groom.

Can you not discuss the issue with them to determine whether they consider 'better' photograhs worthy of a little bit of a seating re-think ?

Hard to comment really but I'd have thought a dicussion with the B & G was the order of the day.

 sorry, your last post, are you complaining about not getting an immediate response, at midnight on a saturday?

In answer to your question, either get another 2nd, or settle for a single vantage point, you can only work with what you have, if moving round is not possible, then it's not possible. Make sure the couple are aware of this beforehand, then there can be no expectation of a mix of viewpoints.

The venue doesn't meet your expectations.
The forum doesn't meet your expectations
The 2nd shooter situation doesn't meet your expectations.

The problem here is the difference between your expectations and what you can provide. The solution is to use this as a reality check.

  • It's nice to be able to shoot from a selection of angles during the service, but is it a necessity? No,
Plan to get where you need to be for the important shots and don't draw attention to yourself. Use this as a lesson learnt, weddings aren't there to provide you with great opportunities to take nice pictures. Your responsibility is to provide the B&G with shots of their wedding day, they knew the size of the Church when they booked it - and I'm sure that was a more important decision than their choice of photographer. It's rare for most of us to move during the wedding service. So after you've shot the bride arrival at the door, it's a swift move to the front of the church (if allowed) and stay in one spot till the signing of the register. Once the register is signed, back to the rear of the church for the B&G aisle shot. If the church is so small you can't get in front of the B&G to shoot the service, then shoot it from the aisle, just like in churches we're not allowed up front.

Yes?
If you've promised the selection of angles to the B&G, use this a a lesson - never promise any particular shots, you're opening yourself up to a host of issues, and having to explain to the B&G that things have changed before you start to shoot is a minor one.

  • It'd be great to be able to get a response from a bunch of wedding photographers late at night on a peak season wedding night, but is it a necessity? No,

Relax, the answers will come, and they'll be better answers if you keep a cool head about it.;)
  • It'd be great if your 2nd shooter had the right gear. Is a 2nd even necessary?

If the answer is Yes, then you'll be paying someone that's reliable, you could still find someone if you advertise here. if No, then your '2nd' can become your assistant, helping with groups etc. then maybe loan them your spare body for a few shots when things get relaxed.
It's not ideal for all your bodies to be in use, but if it's necessary it's not the end of the world.

ty and uhmmmm could ya tell panic was setting in ....

i agree with everything you have said so far my wedding experiences have been

an outside pagan wedding ... cows and all

a civil service with a very unhelpful person doing the service no flash no shots of service we re-enact ... and then not actually re-enact it ... etc

and one that was a walkover the rev was simply awesome and the B&G were so happy even with all the shots from friends coming in only mine got used for the album in the end ...

i have not once promised anything till saw the church was more concerned about not being able to make shots happen and disappointing them since they are good friends. so i have learnt many lessons the hard way but thankfully will never promise something i cannot deliver we have a meeting tomo to try to figure out what we can and will do about the space issue
even if it means getting arrival shots and me remoting the camrea at the front unfortunately the second issue i found was sound ... shutter noise was like a bomb going off in the small space lol ...... sigh

as fer the not meeting expectations... this forum always has ... well till the warnings had to go up since reason i stopped comin on was the vibe in here got hostile to newbies. secondly the place..... come on a church in the fells all on it's own ... meets my expectations i just did not want to raise theirs for something i could not deliver hence asking for advice. lastly the second shooter .. if only we all had the money starting out for second bodies and ranger set-ups and softboxes and every lens we feel we need ....

your answer is greatly appreciated unfortunately my panic and stress got the better of me when i posted the Q so judge me as you will ... simply you do not know me ...

i would be like the elephant in the room ... it really is that small :)

we have a load of better pics etc for groups etc planned it was the ceremony only causing me REAL headaches ty for your reply

What lenses are you shooting with? In a small space such as you've described I would opt to stand at the back anyway. Use the zoom for some close-ups (not too close, waist up of the couple) and use a wider lens to get some full-length shots showing the location. As long as you tell them to face each other when they're doing their vows and exchanging rings, and ask the ring-bearer not to block your view when handing over the rings, I'm sure it will be fine. Good luck!

i kid you not a 17-50 ...2.8 should get me close enough to get some nice shots of the couple up front at 50 and my nifty will help should weather be bad i did some test shots with the 17-50 on an ok day and it nailed them all ... i only have a 70-300 vc which i can handhold down to 1/60th ok since it has vc but to mee think it will be too close unless nailing the ring exchanges ... i went thinnking wanted a 70-200 which i would hire for the day ... left thinking maybe a 10-20 would be better lol

give you an idea the altar is against the wall at the back and i am all of 6 feet from it against the side wall
