Seems that it tries to connect then fails. Do you have settings for security key ?

Not familiar with the desire but I'm sure someone will come along soon that does.

Yep i have the number all 26 of them

Thanks for your help

Doesn't sound necessary but try d/l Blade wifi fix from the Market - it's free. It checks if your wifi is on and connects if it isn't. Very handy on the San Francisco which has a problem with dropping wifi connection.

ps try a different wifi signal (eg McDonalds) to eliminate a problem with just yours.

Try changing channel on router in the wireless settings.
Does all other equipment work on the wifi? laptop etc?

Still doesn't explain why i have no internet on the phone its self

Looks like it is a common problem with HTCs!
Type 'no internet on HTC Desire' on Google

On the windows HTCs, you need to go to the System->Connections, and specify which networks are allowed to be used to connect to the internet.
Which network are you on? On t-mobile, to use the internet for the first time, you are advised to log into your t-mobile, and get the network settings SMS'd to you.
(the network should in theory the network should detect the new phone on the network and do it for you, but shouldn't hurt)

did you say livebox, as in orange livebox? have you pressed the button on the router to allow the connection?

as for internet on the actual phone, do you have it on your contract and are you in an area with data coverage? on the signal graph do you have a G, H, E or 3G?

Yeh it's a orange livebox....I've pressed "A button" can't mind which one there's a 1 &2 ,I'm on vodafone contact with 1GB of internet downloading .I don't have any of these letters nor did i have them when i had the google nexus 1 though and it had a great connection this is whats confusing me

I dunno ,i've only had this phone since midday and i'm already regretting having it :bang::bang::bang:

it sounds like its 2nd hand? if so id concider a factory reset to clear out any old settings.

or have you bought it sim free?

either way its going to need some setting up, its not the phones fault..

is it vodafone branded or unlocked? if you go into network settings then mobile network settings you should get the option to search for networks

It's an o2 unlocked to any networks ,would the fact it being o2 branded be a problem :(

I have been Neil ,yeh its not new and it was locked to 02 ,think thats gona be my next step, make the decision :D

if its unlocked it shouldnt matter..

if you press the menu button then go to wireless and networks. go in to mobile networks, what does it say underneath network operators? also if you go in to access point names, what is selected?

Yes.

Perform a factory reset first, then try going to the vodaphone website, see if you can log into your account, and send the setup details back to the phone. You might even need to download a vodaphone branded ROM to the phone.
If you cannot find a section for that, then you will need to phone up Vodaphone customer services and ask them to send the details to the phone. Assuming that the phone is licensed to be on the vodaphone network, then they should be able to send the network SMS to enable it.

Has the phone been left on for an extended period of time? When I had to get a similar thing done with a 'real' new phone on t-mobile, I was informed at the time that sometimes it can take 3 days for the network to notice and send the SMS automatically. If you have been turning the phone on and off (which I what I would probably do if I was having a problem with it), then it is possible that the network has not responded with the correct settings yet.

This forum, I have found to be brilliant with HTC devices

Have you confirmed with the seller that internet worked prior to the device being sold? Wifi would use a different antenna for example.

Network operators
vodafone UK

Access point names page is blank bar at the top of the page it says

APNs

I've got the HTC Desire too and sometimes have the same problem, right now I have the laptop sitting on my knee with a very strong wifi signal from my router in the other room. in my other hand the HTC Desire with no wifi signal, again it refuses to connect. I switched off phone and rebooted the phone, now I have a signal again.

Try rebooting the phone, have you put the phone Mac address into the router ?

the orange live box needs the "1" button pressed so the "@" light flashes before anything can connect to the wireless.

off the top of my head. my old livebox went straight back in the box when i realised how rubbish it was (dont throw it out, orange ask them back at the end of your contract)

Thanks so much to everyone for your help:clap::clap:, did a hard reset and i now have wifi but still no internet .Think i'll have to contact vodafone ,but thats for another day i'm" ferm la bushed" (as delboy would say ):D

Friendly place this TP forum (whish others were the same) give yourself a big pat on the back

If your getting wifi signal from your router but no connection. sounds like you need to enter Mac address into router

i have internet on desire whilst connected to wifi ,when wifi is disabled on desire i can't connect to internet in the usual way .

Something rings a bell I read somewhere thet you might need to disable wifi on the phone setting if you want it to get internet from your phone provider. If your near your router then it will pick up wifi first rather than use your phone provider
