I was wondering about the follwoing custom functions on my 450D
-Noise reduction for high iso speed
-Noise redution for slow shutter speed

Altough I can't remember the extact name of the function from the top of my head.... :shake:

Anyway.. I was thinking if these functions should be used when using high iso or slow shutter speed. Are there any disadvantages in using them? i.e. does the the image quality degrade?

Reason why I'm asking this is.. if they are THAT good, shouldn't it be switched to 'on' all the time? The fact that you can switch it off makes me think that image quality is sacrificed for less noise. Can anyone confirm this?

Not sure exactly what happens with the High ISO setting, nor whether it really makes much difference, but in RAW you will only get 2 shots in continuous mode before the camera starts slowing up, as opposed to 6. Slow Shutter speed NR, I believe does the in camera equivalent of dark frame subtraction. What this does is to take a normal image of say 30 seconds, then take another image of 30 seconds but with the shutter closed, this picks up the noise from the sensor only and the camera then subtracts the noise in the dark frame from the image. Sounds good, but it means that each image takes twice as long to save.

I have turned mine off, the high ISO got irritating for continuous, and I can't be doing with spending 60 seconds to capture a 30 second shot.

Don't know about Canons, but on my Sony A700 the Noise Reduction in camera gives an annoyed slightly watercolour effect. The real irritating thig was that, at first you couldn't turn them off, just set to Low, it took a firmware upgrade to fix that problem. And yes, like the others it seriously affects the fps when they're switched on. Best to fix noise afterwards with Noise Ninja or a similar package.
