Noisey skies

I can't find out what the problem is, i did two sunsets over the last 2 days and i'm getting noise in the skies
I'm taking them at f16 & f13, i've checked ISO, it's happening at 30sec and 2minutes with ND10stop.
I'm not really pushing the boundaries with processing, just maybe adding +1 on exposure then a couple of small tweaks. Anyone have a guess to what i'm doing wrong ? ta.

Not sure why it's coming out of the camera like that, although it's be interesting to see what ISO100 was like.

Hope you don't mind but I had a play in LR3 and applied a little noise reduction

That's great Russ what did you do ? i only have Elements and used the NR.
Thanks.

I used the NR sliders in LightRoom3, moved the shadow curve a very small amount as it did loose a little contrast.

There was a post in the PP section about NR programs, might be worth taking a look in there for standalone software?

Also, I know my Canons have a built-in NR on long exposure settings. This takes a "shot" with the shutter closed to work out what the black should look like and the takes away the noise from the actual picture.

For comparison, I took some firework pics http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=242843&id=630857049&l=86631661cd and didn't use as much NR on them as I did with your pic.

I have this too but i only seem to use it for dead of night photography, maybe i should start using it, takes more time & battery but i should be using that, lol

I'll have a look at NR software cheers.

Try downloading imagenomic noiseware (community edition) it's free and jolly effective.
I upgraded to the pro edition and apart from being able to batch process and a couple of extra twiddly bits they are the same.
It's simple to operate and it works.
You can also download plug ins for various programs too.

Nikon D300 colour noise... go google it.

You can see it at ISO200 and like 1/3000th if you shoot a blue sky on a sunny day.

Some other cameras also suffer from it too, can't remember which though.

Its probably been emphasised here by either the colours or your processing (sharpening?) but its there all the time.

maybe adding +1 on exposure

Probably a big part of it

Yup, boosting exposure in post-processing is the best way of adding noise. Doing very long exposures will also increase the amount of noise.

So I'm not sure why you're using very narrow apertures and a 10-stop ND with a 2 minute exposure? You could remove the ND and use f8 instead of f16 which would give you a shutter speed of around 1/200s with no need to boost exposure.
