Im looking at building a high speed rig for my camera. Basically take a shutter release tear it apart attach it to some relays and see what i can catch by being just at the right time

now i dont want to buy a top spec nikon release. A cheap one will do but im wondering if all releases are made equal?

Anyone have any experience in this?

Here's the pinouts for various releases, so you can see how easy it would be:

I've built my own for Pentax, but as they use 2.5mm audio plugs, it's exceptionally easy for that system. Once you get the right connector (e.g. from a cheap chinese copy) then it won't be too difficult to do - typically you just need to short the required pin to ground (e.g. the focus to trigger autofocus or the shutter to shoot).
