Feel for ya!

She's a good looking young lady..and just like my daughter with the tongue sticking out.

A slap on the back of the legs generally does it:thumbs:

The lad's not so bad either. Butter wouldn't melt - yeah right:lol:

Found it more difficult with my own kids and people's I know as the kids tend to misbehave in front of their mates:bang:

Terri,

If you weren't a photographer you wouldn't be being so critical. Despite their technical imperfections they are actually quite pleasing images :-)

There's actually not that much "wrong" with them.

1. This is a fun shot and you've indicated that by the lens tilt. If your daughter (and didn't we all guess that's who it is?) is the main subject then you could use a little more depth of field, i.e. a narrower aperture. As this would give you a slower shutter speed, you'd need to keep your hands a little steadier. Alternatively, you could select the nearest focus point to your daughter to make her sharp and let the others go a little out of focus. If you haven't used focus points before, your manual should have details.

2. This is a great shot that could probably do with a bit more contrast as there's a fair bit more light coming in at the top-right of the lens. But the colour's good and the framing is great. Take any advice about chopping tops of heads or hands off with a pinch of salt. It's possibly best that you start off practising this for various reasons, but as you progress you'll learn how and when to break the rules. And why.

3. Nothing wrong with this one at all. It's obvious who the most important person in the picture is, and you got the most important bit (IMO) right: making sure the eyes are sharp. And you've taken the shot from slightly below, which is flattering to your subject as it can make them look more important than the rest of the picture. There's only one slight distraction - the 7 coloured shapes (heptagons) at the top right. While they tell me that your lens's aperture has 7 blades, they also draw my eye up into that corner. They're easily removed with a clone tool.

If you can get pictures as good as these, your next step is to practise, and then practise some more. It's also worth while checking out other people's shots that are similar to the ones you want to perfect. Look at the framing, the angles, how the light falls on the subject, how the subject is positioned relative to the camera. Lastly, there are some great tutorials in this forum that are worth practising, and a Google search for, say, "portrait processing" should throw up lots more.

Terri, A's not the only one who sticks her tongue out at cameras - I do it as well (better, actually!)

I take it G has been banned from any activities where his nose might get injured?

Hope your hands improve ASAP.

Oh Nod you have no idea how often she does this.. G's ball is next week.. and hand are well you know. jab tomorrow will be ok then for a bit.. lol

thanks Nod.

The hardest people to take photos of are people you know when in this type of situation. They know it only Terri and its a fun thing to wind you up. If it was someone else who they didn't know they would pose and have their photo taken no problem but becasue they know you they don't play nice.

I get people I know hiding behind others, under tables tounges out what ever but everyone else its perfectly normal smiles etc. I get my mate to go take the photos of people I know its far easier.

She is a b****r but is getting better and make no odds to her who is taking the picture.. she is just a toad..(no idea where she gets it from):)

I know exactly where your coming from, one of my reasons for getting a proper camera and trying to learn how to take half decent pictures is so I could take them of my daughter. For everyone else she will sit/stand still do what every they ask whilst taking her picture but for me I get the silly faces, turning her head away, running off etc. :bang:

I'm considering bribery now.

You sound like me... as I am also beginning to hate taking pics of people. I think its because they move and its hard to get everyone looking at the camera and not blinking etc etc

Terri, I was shown a friend's wedding album recently that contained images which cost them several thousand pounds, and in all honesty I'd say yours are better......

FITP (Graham) thank you for that. but alas i know what you are saying as my sis in law's were horrid also. the kids like them and that is the main thing. it was just done for them. but thank you once agian

There's always someone that will blink or look away at the wrong moment. People are hard but birds are worse. They take even less direction :)

It's all down to practice really. I've seen a lot worse than yours. I've done a lot worse than yours!!

Just keep at it.

Next time, Terri, wave the bill for the Limo hire in her direction and tell her to keep it in her mouth or pay for the fun bits...

Nod that is a good idea expect she would just pass it too her dad and TELL hi to pay it lol she has just seen the pictures and is laughing her sox off.

I love this thread....Terri...kudos babe !

see they are better wher when she is being silly as you tend not to look at how rubbish the shot is.. (my excuse and i am sticking to it).:p

You really do need to get a bit of self confidence.

She is lovely..........and this one's a great shot:thumbs:

thank you very much for that. i am just hard on myself and i can see so much wrong BUT i can only get better so as the old school reports used to say "needs to try harder" :D

:D thank you for taking the time to write this

You're very welcome :)

This latest one is just as good as number 2, above. Good colours, interesting subject, great separation between the subject and the background. Again, you're almost shooting into the light so it could do with a contrast tweak, but it's a good photo, without any doubt.

Maybe not the greatest set of pics in the world, but by no means the worst either...

#3 is easily the pick for me, nice use of DoF :)

#2 and #4 are either spoilt by tongues being stuck out or a bit of a cluttered background, but to be honest if they were of my kids for my own personal collection, i'd be more than happy.

... as the old school reports used to say "needs to try harder" :D

Crikey you didn't go to the same school as me did you - as that was what our RE Teacher wrote on everyones school report, as sure she used carbon paper to do it

Great advice Garry...

I knew there was a reason I stuck with this forum!

Amongst the dross, sometime there are words of wisdom...
