Number recognition software

Hi, does anyone know of any programs out there which automatically scan images for bib numbers and possibly renames files with that number- a long shot but hoping something is out there. Doing event photography, fast turn around time is vital , especially if you want to print on site but the job of making a data base based on athlete numbers is a bit of a nightmare.

Have you managed to find anything yet that comes close to doing what you want? I'm in a similar position, I need to recognise mountain bikes and roughly between 1000 and 2500 for each event. Currently I take about 2 hours of manual identification for these, but looking to do it in an automated way if possible.

Don't know of anything that does exactly what you're after but thinking laterally, could you use the "Faces" feature of iPhoto or Aperture to group the shots? The you could tag all of each runners pics at once.

That only works if you've got multiple pictures of each runner though I suppose.
