Numbering query/problem

Hoping someone can find a quick solution to this.

When I started with my D40, I didn't have continuous numbering on and, as a result, I have a load of shots with identical numbers which I want in the same folder (as they are the same subject). How can I, without manually doing so, change all of the numbers so they start as DSC_0037 instead of DSC_0001 as they are now?

Adobe bridge will renumber them as will most editing software. Do a search on here as there was a post not long ago on the subject.
