I have been photo's for about 1 year now , when I photograph a flower etc . When I am close to the object I am photographing no problem getting background blured , but when i am standing more than 6 feet away cant seem to get same results what am i doing wrong.

This is just normal physics at work. DoF will be really narrow at close disatances, so it will be easy to get the background out of focus. As you move away from the subject, it becomes more difficult.

Some of the things you can do to help you achieve what you want include :-

Keep as much room between your foreground subject and the background as you possibly can.
Use as wide an aperture as you possibly can.
Use a longer focal length.

Thanks

Yes it would, as would a 50 prime with around a 1.4 aperture. I think Scarecrow has it covered really.

This is known as 'Shallow' or 'Narrow' Depth of Field, & there are probably a number of tutorials online regarding how to capture it. A longer focal length, closer the the subject & a larger Aperture can all contribute to creating this effect. @Sacrecrow explained things well :}
