So I'm off to Iceland in April next year and will be (hopefully) hiring a camper van of some sort.

Does anyone have any recommendations of where to hire from and what to hire please.

I know that F roads are challenging and a lot of the vehicles are not approved for F roads, do I really need that? It will be my first time there and I'll be there for a week.

I don't think the F roads are open until June, they often have barriers across to stop the more "adventurous" drivers

Depending on how adventurous you and any travel partners are.... last time I went (2 of us) hired a 4x4 - Hyundai Tucson from here https://www.iceland4x4carrental.com/
Very good service and no hassle whatsoever - we folded the rear seats down at night and slept on thermarest matts (plenty of room for 2 people) Took sleeping bags, a couple of camping stove adaptors and mess tins etc.
Worked out about half the price of a dedicated camper plus you have the benefit of a 4x4 for the rougher terain off the ring road, those little camper vans really aren't built for anything other than the main ring road and for me they are way overpriced for what you get, speaking from experience I've used http://www.gocampers.is/

We got a 3-person motorhome from Geysir which is at the airport - we walked over to their place from the terminal.

We drove all around the west side of the island, and up north as far as Husavik. Great fun - we parked overnight in some simply stunning places. It’s great to be in a campervan - stop, have a wander around, catch some fresh Artic Char in a nearby river, wander back and fry them up. Add champagne chilled in a bucket filled with glacial ice. Sorted.

We only did one dirt road which was over a pass in the Westfjords. It was rather “amusing” as it was slick with a thin layer of mud so going down was a bit buttock clenching.
