Official Talk Leica thread

it flares much less than the 50 cron, but has more distortion and not quite as nice colours (imo) so you pays your money and makes your choice! I miss my cron… but the Zeiss 50/2 isn’t far behind and is so much cheaper on the used market (distortion and colour are easier to fix in lightroom than flare!)
I really like my 50 cron but it does flare terribly! The 35 cron I have is almost perfect by comparison.

Hi, a LUFI thread made me interested comparing the flaring behavior of my 5 50mm M mounts.

This is not a test in the strict sense. No ceteris paribus etc. ... My M9 handheld, sun in the top left corner, everything equal.

So, here we go, #1 of 5 ... (M9 - Summarit 2,5/50):

Hi, and some more of my flaring comparison ... (M9 - ZEISS Sonnar1,5/50)

Hi, to end this flaring comparison (M9 - VOIGTLÄNDER Apo-Lanthar 2/50)

My conclusions : I was quite surprised how the Sonnar performed. The Summarit is said not to flare by many (non-owners, hearsayers ?). But it does.

The Apo-Lanthar showed no flaring in my comparison. But it flared a little in other situations ...

The Summicron flared less than I expected, the Planar more.

I would be very reluctant to make a general statement based on a single real-life comparison. Other settings might lead to slightly different results.

One could design 100 different situations and arrive at much more differentiated findings.

I leave this to the experts (real, and self-proclaimed) and the influencers .

In real life, flaring can be avoided by changing one's position in most cases.

A reporter without room to move and under pressure to capture the decisive moment might be affected.

And sunrise- and sunset-shooters cannot change their positions very much ... ---

I was quite surprised ... --- My conclusion : My standard environment has limited predictive power. Good performance there does not mean good performance everywhere.

So, over time, I shall try to find and show similar (counter-) examples of my other lenses.

Hi, the flowers were in the bright sun. I should have provided some shade ... - Now, I have reduced brightness :

Nah .. looked ok. I just find that bright sunshine, and dafodils are always a goot test of a sensor... whether it blows the bright part or sacrifices the darker areas.
\either way, nice shot!
