Oh dear, my PC is going crazy...

Earlier today my PC was running fine, but now it seems to be going strange. First thing I noticed was that my sound had disappeared, having just bought new headphones yesterday I thought it was a problem with them, so I restarted which usually brings the sound back, no luck. Tried this a few times. Now i'm noticing playing anything in Winamp will, well, do nothing. You open up the track and it'll just stay at 0:00. You can move to different points in the track it'll show the timer but nothing ever plays, as the track dosn't make any progress. Playing in in WMP instead seems to play it, but it's odd in that the track reaches the end, but it's as if it's still playing, it dosn't 'stop'. Obviously I don't know if it's still playing because i'm getting no sound, this is with my headphones, and i've also tried my speakers.
My PC then seems to freeze when exiting Winamp, the taskbar etc, I can't click start for example, and I have to force close it.

Only thing i've done today is moved a few things outside the PC, some DVD's had fallen down the side (the case is open) so I thought I may have loosened a cable, maybe the hard drive cable when I moved them, but i've checked everything. It's pretty strange :/

a DVD fell IN to the computer? arent CDs/DVDs conductive to electric?

No. ;)

It does sound like a software glitch rather than hardware but I would just disconnect each connector and re-connect them just to check. Afterwards its going to be sound drivers and associated software.

The side of the case (facing the wall) is always off. Some DVD cases and such had fallen down and yes some were inside the case.
Problems seem to be getting stranger. Just booted up Dawn of War, which I play regularly with no problems, the intro movie usually plays within about 2 seconds of opening the game, this time there is no movie, just a black screen, although I press escape 3 times as I usually do to skip the movies and the game starts. So it's as if they are playing but i'm just getting the black screen. However when I exit the game, it freezes and I have to force quit, which never happens.

The only thing I can think of that may affect both sound and video would be your direct x drivers, check that you have the latest. Failing that, remove, dust off, clean and replace your sound card .. if it's not built onto your motherboard.

Hmm, it seems to have recovered. I turned everything off completely (plugs etc) for an hour while I had my driving lesson (reversing in car parks - bleh) and it seems to be fine now. I heard that this resets the CMOS battery or something?

the only way you normally reset the CMOS is by changing a jumper setting on the motherboard..
