I am have been volunteered to do a wedding for a friend of a friend ... (they cannot afford a pro tog and my name came up...doh) ... anyways kit wise I have a D300 Tamron 17-50 2.8 and 50mm1.4 but also a flashgun cords etc ... I know a Tele 2.8 would be nice howver my 70-300 Sigma will have to do for the big day as asking for more kit from the missus would end in bloodshed right now..

I have so far had a meeting with bride and groom and this weekend will be visiting the venue for light tests (apparently a first) and ideas ... so can people suggest how to get the best the gear and any ideas on how to give real ZAP to the shots I did another friends wedding a few months ago but on a very very candid basis and it was a Pagan wedding so this new scenario is a very daunting but also b exciting I have ideas know roughly how to get the best from the gear etc but want some ideas from you guys who know best ....:bang::eek::(

Have a look in the tutorials section, believe it or not some nutter wrote a guide to shooting your first wedding!

(It was DiddyDave and it's rather good)

aha the search is fixed YAY !!! only asked cos when I popped in it kept telling me I had no rights ..... seems I must be a terrosists with a camera lol ... thanks will go find it ... but any other ideas would be fab guys

A 70-200mm f/2.8 G ED VR II costs £84 to rent for 7 days from Lenses for Hire, why don't you get the B&G to cough up for that and you get a couple of extra days to play eith it before and after the wedding as a thank you?

Hi Mark ,

I have done this twice - once for a c-list celeb - who was skint, and a mate who had the Big C.

I used a 28-135 IS (Canon) and had good results - both days had p1ss poor weather - I also went unconventional and used a 100-400L for candids, which went down a storm.

The link from AliB to look at DD tips is a must - only met him once - but a top bloke.

To me it really depende on what the B&G want - I got total call on both. That said I shall never do another one, and leave it to folks who are considerably more skilled than me.

been considering that but to be honest from what we have agreed think things so far ok but if need be will do just that and they have said will pay if they think they up to scratch (uhuhhhhhhhhh) but either way would love to do it for them so am happy to run about as know they worth the effort. ... if the venue is as bright as suggested should be fine with 5.6 so long as do not go beyond 200 .... and rest can be cleaned up a touch.

have a selection of I like this shots pics and list of we would love these shots ... my first wedding took about 500 pics B&G selected 250 I think when I would have binned all but 10 lol .. so was very happy with that.

have to say the more I am practising the happier I feel and have even talked them into some pre wedding trials to get me eye in .. helps that the paige boy is adorable lol ... will look into some lenses but then a second body comes into play have a D60 but think that will be last resort for some shots .... can swap REALLY quick when needed

and if it's not? If it's a dull day?...

and f5.6 has me running for the hills! I only ever go above that for group shots and sensor cleaning :shake: The rest of the day (yes that's the whole day) I'm at f2.8. Aperture selection is not just about light but creative use of DOF too.

i just did my 1st wedding 7 weeks ago, and learned a lot

1) have someone else with you

2) get a member of the wedding party to roundup oher members of the party or identify them for you

3) talk to the officials about what you can do and can`t

4) and most importantly know your equiptment and limitaions of your equiptment

if possible go to the venue before hand to assess it

ask if the b&g want any specific photos of poeple.

if i where closer i would have give you a hand

Cheers Steve

Why Not ask them to pay for the hire of the Extra Lens,if your open with them and tell them, this will make the Inside church shots easier/ better,i cant see that's a problem, could be wrong !!

if they will pay for the hire, it would be well worth it.

if it a church the lighting can be difficult without the lenses to handle it.

a registry office tend to be more balanced lighting

Cheers Steve

As Ali said. I dont do weddings, but have done christenings which can be similar and rarely go above f4, unless I have group shots to do.

 lol I usually shoot landscapes and so f 11-16 is my friend !!!!! I have been learning rapidly the love of 1.8 and 2.8 have to say has awakened a side of me I had no idea eisted .... love it but price wise am very very aware of this couples income (one works with me) hence even agreeing or would have strongly pointed them the pro route and explained as best I can the limits of the gear I have to a non tog so far as even showing them the limits

not a church local hotel that does em and so far as know is bright etc etc ... so will be investigating soon to check their BRIGHt and my bright to see if I agree any doubnts then will be asking about hire charges etc

do it as a friend for costs, your gift is your time but they can cover the very reasonable rental, personally I'd grab a 24-70 and pair of sb900s while I was there mind

so you have a d300 and d60 as backup, perfectly workable in all honesty, 17-50 is nearest thing to a 24-70, a 50/1.4 is an 85/2.2 so not a bad portraits lens

how are you on lighting on are you going with KISS (keep it simple stupid) which is what I did first time out :D

erm churches I've been in recently have been f2.8 iso 3200 1/100 :p a lot of civil ceremonies are better but they tend to be backlit by a massive window :s

Speaking of which, did you get my change of address email?

To the OP...the main thing is organise the people: if everyone is where they should be when you need them to be, then it's a doddle - relatively speaking.

Yep some churches make the black hole of Calcutta look brightly lit.

Can you give us the location - someone may know it and could offer advice.
What is the date - and what time is the wedding?
I did the sister in laws wedding around this time of year 2 yrs ago, and as it was getting dark when the service finished really struggled with any outdoor shots.

Would you like a second tog? THere are plenty of people who would like to be on board with a project like this and would be there with some back up kit, some different ideas and the ability to get some informal and candid shots.

I would definately make sure you have someone to organise people for you, and don't be afraid to crank up the ISO. A grainy B+W that is sharp is a nice shot, any kind of blurry shot is not.

Good luck and get practising shooting people if landscapes are your bag.

Also, why not do a "before" shoot with the B+G. It will build up a bit of familiarity for all of you as wel as some more experience.
