First I will apologise if this has been asked before. Information I am after is which is the best way to get my old family black and white prints transferred into a digital format, so the family can gather all the old photos and get them onto a disc. I presume a good quality scanner but am unsure so asking here. Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks Ally

I don't have a scanner so I just photograph old pictures :) It seems to work for me.

Never thought about photgraphing them, excuse my ignorance but what lens do you use?

Thanks

Anything that will allow you to fill as much of the image as possible with your photo but allowing a space around the photo so that you can rotate, straighten and crop etc.

The beauty of just photographing the photos is that it's quick and painless and you don't have to rush out and buy a scanner :)

In this little example of my parents wedding I made sure that I got the frame in shot too. It easily gives an image big enough for printing and framing and indeed I gave a copy to each of my sisters and one has a framed copy on the wall. One of me there too :o)

Thanks for tips. very much appreciated.

I've used both methods and my scanner wasn't particulary expensive,( Epson 1670) I picked it up second hand as it had the ability to scan negatives as well as prints. Prior to going digital I too used to just copy the prints using extension tubes and a 50mm lens. Either way should get you decent results, and of course if you have photoshop or something similar you can rescue old creased, faded or damaged prints. I find I get as much pleasure from doing this as taking pictures.

Thanks Ken for taking the time to give me some tips.
