No
my uncle was asking what options are there from old negatives to digital, can anyone help as i don't have a clue?

thanks in advance

Probably better off asking in Film & Conventional, or have a look at the many similar threads there.

The long and the short of it is

- get a scanner
- use a macro lens or dedicated copier lens to take a photograph of the negs with your digital camera

Really would depend on the format of the old negatives. If 35mm there is a vast number of different types of options from cheap dedicated film scanners, flatbed scanners with the option of doing film and more expensive (a lot) quality dedicated film scanners and even more expensive drum scanners.

I did about 400 35mm slides on a flatbed scanner over a couple of weeks a couple of hours each night.

If you are talking larger formats such as 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9 and 5x4 then prices really start to rise, cheapest option is a flatbed scanner that will also do these sizes of film and again film scanners and drum scanners start in the low £1000's and go up to the £10,000s.

thanks.

i would imagine 35mm

If they were any good, we'd all have one..:)

There is no one size fits all answer without more precise detail about what you want to do.

How many negs ?
Are they cut film or slides ?
What res do you need, just interweb res or bigger ?
Do you intend to man the scanner or do you expect to press the go button and leave it ?

Ah sorry.
It's for home personal use to backup old normal 35mm film picture?
Excuse my age and memory but when developed and returned were they in strips of 4 or 5 pics each

As it's home use to back up old pics so budget looking lower end of scale but nothing too rubbish. Resolution what would a normal 7x5 keep sake say be best at?

If you or a relative/friend have a Costco membership card they offer a film to CD service, I'm not sure of the cost etc. but I had a friend (photographer) who had around 20 36exp. 35mm films scanned and transferred onto CD/DVD and was delighted with both the quality and price.

For cut negs you will have to man the scanner, cheapest bestest is a flatbed, a 2nd hand v500 was sold here recently for £80, as long as your expectations are not too high this calibre of scanner would do fine, and smash that PCWorld thing in to the middle of next week.:)

wow, thanks for the heads up as I have Costco membership. Will enquire, as that would be easiest and best
