Hi,

Been looking at going down the mac route, and found some cheap stuff on ebay.

The older G5 power macs can be got for a little as £185 off ebay:

or maybe even a dual G5:

I've also been looking at a Dell monitor, this seems to be the best for a decent price:

Getting the monitor would also make the upgrade route better and could use it with my Dell D830...

I know the G5's are old but they can't be that bad! it will still work with leopard, lightroom, ilife (not garage band) and can add Hdd's and change the graphices card etc.

Any thoughts?

I've got a Power Mac G4, that I just use for the odd bit of testing etc. It's a bit old/slow but using an older Mac of eBay is a good way to see how you get on with the system over an extended period of time, without shelling out loads of £££.

I already have Macs and have also been looking at these but I can't decide what to do. I'm not sure all the software will work on them now.

I run a G5 at home... copes fine with PS CS4, and most other packages. Photomatix can be a bit slow, but I hardly use it tbh.

Hi, I have a Dual G5, just be aware that a lot of the 'new' software is being designed for the intel based Macs and may not work on the G5 I believe. So they're not too future proof at the moment.
If anyone knows different then please correct me.

Paul.

The G5 is still a powerful machine and will handle most tasks. You will not be able to upgrade to the latest OS 'Snow Leopard' but this is virtually identical to 'Leopard' anyway with the biggest differences all being under the hood. Lightroom 3 is intel only and I would guess that CS5 will be too! I have a G5 iMac here and it is used just as much as the other machines which are all intel.

I just got myself a G5 from eBay. Very pleased with it indeed. It can run CS3 with no problems and is quite quick. I also do video editing in Final Cut HD and it chugs away nicely for this.

My spec is:

G5 1.6Ghz single processor
2GB Ram
100GB Sata HDD
OSX Leopard

Cost me £200.

I also have a Macbook Pro 13" but I keep that mainly for web browsing and Uni work.

We had a member on here selling a 23" Apple display and a G5 Mac last week and it just wasn't selling despite being an absolute corker of a machine!

Ah right. I missed that iMac in there as well! Would have got that beauty for the spare room :D

Let us know how you get on with it :) Not sure how quick a single core will be though. I'm watching lots on there myself.

You are right there it is a great price :D You could probably sell it on again in a year for the same! Excited?

Just plugged it in but going have to wait to play with it till later tonight.

My old Silicon Graphics 1600SW monitor still works although it buzzes a bit these days!

Think my 70-200 L might have to go so I can get a decent monitor :-(

You need a decent monitor!! I was outbid on one in the last second this afternoon! Probably a good thing the mrs would be annoyed with another mac in the house.

I found 2GB of RAM in an old computer, so the G5 now has 3GB.

It's much faster with more memory!

Got CS2 installed but not given it a good run yet.

Ram always makes a big difference! I changed my mind on a Power Mac on saturday when I realised they won't work with aperture so I got a 21.5" iMac on sunday instead and I'm selling my Macbook Pro to pay for it. Its so rapid I love it!!

You tried CS2 yet? Still interested in the performance of them!

Hi Gaz,

I have been looking at aquiring one of these and running osx server on it.

What does it bench?

Thanks,

Grant

I checked your model out on geekbench pretty interesting results :) Surprising how powerful the Quad 2.5ghz model still is!

...and the cost of them still. I think all the current intel macs still get a better geekbench score.

The 1.6ghz G5 Power Mac gets 1000 on geekbench and in comparison my new iMac gets 4500. I think the quad G5 gets 3000.

Have you tried geekbench out?

The real scary thing is the scores the new Mac Pros get. Its just crazy!!

I've got a Powermac G5 Dual 2GHz with 5.5GB of ram. Fitted with a nearly new 1tb hard drive. Only looking for £420 for it. Just gets used to surf the net these days and it's a shame. I've got two intel macs and need to keep them in sync.

Well, it's up and running. Managed to create this (work in progress):

www.gpsutton.com

I do like iweb, although the pages it creates are a little slow. But it's soooooo easy!

Just had a look, it is easy!

Do you know that IF YOU WANT you can delete the "made on a mac" icon.

If you bring up the inspector window, click on the first icon at the top and then on the tab "layout" you can adjust the "content width" value to make your page wider. Personally I change mine to 900px as it fits on most peoples screens. Very few people are using sub 1025 width screens and I don't care about the few percent that don't. - Just a suggestion.
