Yes
If I'm correct in some of what I've read recently Google ranking will or can be affected if your site is not https:// enabled.
Enter "Lets Encrypt" currently on offer free from Tsohosts Cloud platform which will give you a free SSL certificate, Lets Encrypt according to Tsohost will renew every 90 days.

I am about to put together a new website for my son's business and wondering before I start installing the various bits of software should I install Tsohost (his webhost) Lets Encrypt?

His site will not be involved in collecting payments via credit cards/paypal etc or any other payment methods nor will it be gathering any input from visitors.

Maybe it is my suspicious nature but could this free Lets Encrypt service be a honeytrap, once enough folk are using it Lets Encrypt may at some time announce it needs to be paid for future cert's, I'm sure this would cause a lot of hassle to their users.

They're quite good for testing sites but can get annoying having to renew them every 90 days.
For the sake of £10 and if you want SSL you can buy a years certificate with many providers. I've not read that not having https will affect your page ranking, where did you see this?

Same as James, good for developmental purposes, but quite happy to pay for my Multi-Named SSL Cert.

I remember Google telling us this last two years ago, that it was a ranking signal. Informed opinion is though that it is a peripheral ranking signal at best, and it is perfectly possible to lose a lot of ranking by making a bodge of the switchover.

I have the multi named Lets Encrypt SSL certificate installed on the cPanel hosting I have with TSO Host

It automatically renews every 90 days

If you want to make use of having an SSL certificate with TSO Host you would need to get them to install it

Just to add not having an SSL certificate could affect your google rankings

Not only that by not having one Chrome and other browsers will mark your website as not being secure which in turn could put visitors off

Pretty much why I did it. Although PayPal is our payment portal which is of course secure, entering their details into contact forms etc it's just peace of mind.

And with chrome saying "not secure" for anything that isn't https and suggesting that Google results may be effected while its slightly annoying at being pushed down that route it's a no brainer.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll activate Lets Encrypt beforeI start uploading his site.

i prefer the word secure which is what SSL is all about not encrypt.
i like secure and so should you.
