Yes
just been offered a one to one tutor to learn me some basic stuff with my camera

£85 for a one off hour and a half lesson - is that the going rate, and will i learn enough in that time?

Hiya. No idea what the going rate for such a thing is, but if you're anywhere near St. Helens I'll spend a couple of hours with you for the price of a beer in Whetherspoons. I think they have a real ale for 99p. Then you can decide if you want to spend anything on a one to one tutor.

Thats a very nice offer Badger

Good to see people ready to share knowledge and time with newbs :)

one and a half hours is nowhere near enough.

You don't give us any Idea where you live... There might be a number of us who could get you up and running.
As Badger uk says a pub lunch would be more than sufficient.

its around £90 for a rail ticket from Aberdeen to St Helens (return) + pub lunch for several hours of tutoring

vs

£85 for 90 mins

:)

Although, its an 8hr train ride back :bonk:

If you are in Bristol next week I may do some teaching for a pub lunch :naughty:

Realistically, it is the easiest topic in photography. I could understand why strobist lighting or food styling can be challenging.

You should read the camera manual fully, make sure you understand all camera settings, and be able to relate ISO, aperture and shutter speed. There are some generic books (don't have to be about DIGITAL photography, older books still hold true, just substitute film for different ISO settings). A good one is for example 'the complete guide to light and lighting in digital photography'.

There may be a photography club in your area. It may be a good idea to join.

My initial reaction was it was bit of a rip off, but I suppose it depends on the quality of the instruction you get for your money, and everyone doesn't have a handy friend to fulfill this role for them, so I suppose the business opportunity is there to be taken, and it's no different to paying for instruction in anything else?

It's certainly true that the basics of photography, which many beginners have so much trouble with can be explained far more easily sitting down with a mentor and a camera for reference.

my husband bought me a 'one to one' day with a photographer for £295

your offers on here from fellow togs sound excellent value, especially if they have the same camera (or have had in the past) and can de-mystify the settings for you - which is basically what I got for the money.

and a pub lunch sounds excellent, especially if beer is involved! ;)

good luck with your choice - I'd be interested to hear how you get on

That has to be the TP deal of the of the century.

Words that come to mind are, Hand - snap - off

Nice one Badger

I've done much the same thing in Plymouth for a few people, spent the day with them, I get almost as much from it as they do, and for some have taken them out again a few weeks later to see how they have progressed.

I'm always welcome to help people get a better understanding of their equipment and help with understanding techniques.
