Online sales package?

No
I' m thinking of creating a website purely to sell photographic products - postcards, etc - from my own images.

I've already been doing it for years, selling direct to shops, visitor centres, etc, but think its about time I took the business online.

Is there such a thing as a simple, basic, off-the-shelf website design package that I can use?

All depends what features you are looking for. If you want just a commerce solution then I would suggest you take a look at OpenCart (Demo).

It's packed with features, easy to use, easy to install and has extensions and themes available. Most importantly, it's free!

Have a look at Zenfolio.com it provides hosting, card payments templates and ordering/sales processes.

Very simple to use, if you use this voucher code CZS-RJR-UVR you get a discount as well....

Free! I like free!

Have you used it yourself, Martyn?

How could I forget ZenCart, this is also a really good application.

Absolutely!

I've just built a new shop on ZC, so easy to use & configure!

Of course, cream of the crop I'd say would be Magento, but without a pretty decent server and a pro. developer, it's very difficult to use, unless you just use the basics with a pre-built theme. :)

I publish a range of postcards - about 140 designs at the moment. So far all my sales are done by personal visits to outlets, I just have an order form on my website.

But I would like to make online ordering easier for my customers....it needn't have a payment facility at the moment, but I'd like to have samples of all the available designs on my site, at least.

I do wonder whether a full ecommerce site is necessary, as don't have any website design skills myself.

If you want a no fuss well built package look at photoshelter, its not cheep but its maintenance free and dead easy to use and very well specced

Loads of options

Gallery2+paypal cart
Wordpress + Nextgen + ecommerce template
Magento
Gallery2+zencart
Joomla+virtuemart
Oscommerce

The list could be 20 combo's longer... What you need to know is

2. how skilled are you at delaing with templating

I received an Infarction for this post

1. In what way am I trying to promote anything? - they are all free packages, I am not offering anything other than where to start looking

2. Incidentally, for a while, I have wanted advertiser status, I asked for it, I was told something along the lines of "we are reviewing this at the moment, we will contact you in a few days" and I never heard anything back

Lets look at exactly what I have said above...

Is a statement of fact

What you need to know is
1. what absolute functionality do you want

This needs to be the starting point for any successful project, commercial or not, web or anything else

2. how skilled are you at delaing with templating
Essentially, the packages listed above are quite hard work to deal with

Wordpress is the easiest to work with.... Joomla and Magento are at the other end of the scale
If you are working with a combo, you need to be aware that they might have different templating systems... so while you can install gallery+zencart quickly, one soon discovers that they are chalk and cheese in terms of templating technology. If you have few skills, you may be better off choosing wordpress, and loosing some overall functionality, if you have loads of skill, then any of the above wont be an issue

So what should I do?

Looking at my stats I see these website related helpful posts?

From now on I wont bother wasting any of my valuable time trying to help anyone regarding websites. Its a shame, because I do actually enjoy supporting people

If you look properly you'll see the infraction was actually reversed, and given again for the correct post. You have tried to pimp your business time and time again, despite being repeatedly told not to, time and time again.
I personally have tried to make it simple:

You are more than welcome as a person, Richard King, who is interested in photography, and we are thankful for your helpful posts, but do not promote your web / design business or attempt to get custom from the members. Simple.

And a final note, there is another rule which you seem to have missed :

Please do not criticise moderator decisions publicly. Instead, use the Contact Us link to resolve things privately and amicably.

So in order for you to help your fellow members, we have to allow you to promote your business?
Very community minded of you.

Sorry, but we will not be held to ransom and give you special dispensation.

It was something I already considered after this post:

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=3025667&postcount=39

I am not particularly bothered about promoting my business, as I am stacked out with work, but it seems if I do or dont (and for a very long time I haven't) I get flack

In the past I have enquired after an advertiser account, and heard nothing. Seems that whatever I do it is wrong. Which is why I said what I said

Anyway - this is distracting from what the OP is origianlly wanting to know, So I am putting this to bed

You won't mind removing the line from your signature about webdesign then Richard. Also, you've had advertising rates before, twice that I can recall. There is a lovely new pack available now too, banners and everything!

As marcel points out, the infraction was reversed and applied to a different thread, it was my error as I had several windows open checking your previous posts.

The time where people take advantage is now past.

I removed it myself about 1/2 hour ago

I have asked twice, and heard nothing

Just for the sake of anyone else that might want to become an advertiser....

How do you get this pack? I have asked for it, and heard nothing. I have spend some time looking for it, and found nothing

You might think I am purposefully trying to be obtuse.. Infact it is just frustration

Oh dear!

For what its worth, I wouldn't have thought that Richard's original post was trying to promote his own business.

It may not have been that helpful, because I'm a complete novice when it comes to website design, but the expanded version was.

I'm beginning to think that its something i should ask a professional to do for me, anyway.

By far the easiest to set up with - with a very small amount of products (which you have) is Wordpress + Nextgen + the nextgen ecommerce template
http://www.wordpress-ecommerce.com/wordpress-shop-using-nextgen-gallery-and-wp-shopping-cart-7
The installation is simple, and if you fuind a theme you like, the job's almost done, and modifying the theme is very easy (as easy as themes get)

You do need to understand a minimal ammount of code (to make the prices show nicley) but you do get a resonably flexible system

If you want multiple products for the same image - i.e. cards + photo's + different sizes - then look at gallery2+Paypalcart this has a lot more options, and a steeper learning curve, but ultimatally is more flexible
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&so...sg=AFQjCNGy2p6M7YKPboA4esRk35Yo-osaog&cad=rja - the site seems down today. Again there are a limited bunch of themes availabel. Modifying them is a lot harder though

If you want to have optional frames and albums etc.. then you need the zerncart bridge, and thats reasonbably hard work
You will need to template Zencart to Gallery2. There is 1 theme thats available for both G2 and Zencart where everything is joined up. If you like the theme, you can set this up with little fuss. If you dont like the theme, there is a lot of work to do

You could look at Joomla (lots of themes available) - with virtuemart, and put product options in as atributes. You will need to make sure your virtuemart theme joins up with your joomla one, or just ride with what it gives you. Templating is pretty tricky, and only really tackled by people with a solid understanding of PHP, HTML and CSS. However, there are loads of templates available, and you may be lucky and be able to swap a few images about to make a fairly unique design. However the end result is a very flexible site that sells stuff and has loads of options for extensibility down the line http://virtuemart.net/

Alternativley you can look at some of the pre-hosted options like clickpic. To my mind they all look sameish, but you have very little to learn

From here where I sit:

Clickpic sites all look the same
Wordpress is good if you want simple, and you dont have many products, and you dont mind doing things 1 by 1
Gallery 2 is a dream if you have 100's and thousands of images - it manages them well, and getting them on the site is simple
Joomla+virtuemart offers loads of options, and is extreemly flexible and extensible, but styling it beyond the template you choose is a nightmare for the uninitiated

That's very helpful, Richard, and, by god, you must type fast as well.......;)

I'm wondering now if Clikpic might work for me. I'm sure my customers won't notice that it looks like other Clikpic sites, and I already have my own general photography website.

Many thanks again.
