Is it sharp? ok it will depend on the actual one but generally are these regarded as being sharp wide open?

Pretty much....MF at f/1.4 can be tricky though. I had an 85mm f/1.4 AI-S and it was a peach...shooting wide open was not the easiest though. :)

Sharpness will probably depend on how good you are at manual focus.

I'm pretty decent focusing manually but shooting wide open manual with a small viewfinder is pretty damn hard due to the narrow depth of field.

i know it's going to be a swine but im thinking of trying out a film camera and i manually focussed (sp?) everything until 3 weeks ago.

shallow depth of field plus limited shots with film camera in crappy light- steep learning curve

EDIT: and hopefully film body (fm2n hopefully) viewfinder will be big enough :)

On a film camera - with a decent split prism viewfinder (I wish we still had decent VF's!) it'll be much easier.

Simple answere.
YES.

hmm dont think fm2n has split prism VF, open to ideas re film bodies though if folk have opinions on manual cheapish body
