Does anyone use such a "tool" to measure distance

There are a couple of Golf ones for sale ……….. just wondered if anyone has any experience of them

some have a maximum distance to 100 yds
 
I've got a little hand held Stanley one in the shed. It's a laser level that also does distance but from memory it's 100 meters which is fine for anything I do.

You can get theodolites that will work over much greater distances but your into silly money.
 
Strong, cheap, but bloody heavy, colour not too good either

Must be a surveyors school near Cambridge, sometimes see a dozen or more young people out with all their gear on a green space near the river
 
I've been looking into this recently and my conclusion was that the golf measures don't work accurately over the distances that you'd want to measure for photography. I have a laser measure that I use for diy but it's very very difficult to see the point outdoors - though you can buy some red tinted glasses that are supposed to improve visibility (haven't tried them myself).

There are a couple of measures that I found that are designed to be used outside - one was a Bosch (GLM 250 IIRC) and the other was a Leica (more expensive). The Bosch is approx. £230 so not cheap.

I'm guessing you're thinking of measuring hyperfocal distances?
 
I use a Leica laser tape for work it is accurate to a few mm over 200 yards but you could buy a lens for the price it was new (£400ish) ten years agon.

I also have a range finder for shooting accurate to about 3 ft over 600 yards it is an MTC one
