"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Thanks for the info Sangoma, just looked at my G5 only to find that my camera body is on v1.0 (1.1 available) and my 45-150 is on v1.1 (1.2 available) so I have downloaded the updates (a few years old though lol). Now to figure out how to get them on the camera, I hope it is worth it, this is the first time I have even looked for updates.

It is extremely simple, but follow the steps exactly, no shortcuts!

Do the camera first, then follow the same procedure, but putting the lens update file in the root of the card, fit the lens to the camera before starting.

From the Panasonic website:-

Please ensure that the camera battery is fully charged.

Back up all the images and videos from the SD card.

Format the SD card in the camera.

Take a photograph.

Copy the .bin, or .lin, file to the root directory of the SD card. The SD card must be in a SD card read/writer as the card will be write protected when the camera is connected to the computer via USB.

Put the SD card into the camera.

Turn on the camera and select play.

The option to update should then be shown if the update is applicable.

Do not turn off the camera or press any buttons whilst the update is installing.

After the update has installed the camera will reboot. You can check the update has installed by using the VERSION DISP in the Setup menu.

Thanks Sangoma, with your help that was quite easy to do, now to figure out what those updates did lol. Just looked up what they were for, and it turns out I did not need either of them lol, Camera update was version 1.1 for the G5 only corrects wording of the Motion Picture menu on cameras sold in PAL broadcast regions. and the lens update was
Dual I.S.( Image Stabilizer ) is available by this firmware update (in case of the usage of Camera with this function), which my G5 does not have lmao. At least I have learned who to do updates for future reference.

Ordered a second battery for the G80 this evening from Duracell Direct. I've been using it a lot lately with the 12-60 and 100-300mm lenses for walks. Whilst I do notice the loss of capability in both camera and lens for birds/wildlife compared to G9 and 100-400mm, I do find the lighter rig better for short strolls by the river, especially as I have injured a shoulder and find lifting the cameras up a bit uncomfortable at the moment.

So the smaller lighter rig is more enjoyable and is serving me pretty well at the moment.

Just been reading up on the camera and G9 kit lens. In mine came the more expensive Leieca DC VARIO12-60 MM - elmarit lens , not the cheaper lumix version which srprised me a bit

The only noticeable difference between the two lenses is price, not performance, not certain what surprised you though :)

I am still debating which zoom lens to get next - either one with max20 -300-400m range. each has its own advantages and drawback irrespective of price

Depends what you want to use it for.

I have the 100-400mm and really the only bad thing I can say about it is that the zoom is a bit stiff but I gather this is par for the course with this lens.

Good luck choosing.

UPDATE
At last decision made and purchased. My criteria was mainly cost - mm range and amount of usage and optical stablisation. So just ordered a Panasonic 100-300mm f4.0-5.6 II Lumix G Vario Lens. This cost £479 against £1500 elmarit . I could buy 3 of the one I bought, makes one think
Had a serious look at this the 50-200 amd 200-400 elmarit versions and have to be honest I cannot see how they justify the cost . OK what about the used ones then? yet again did a lot of searching on all three and It appears that dust was present in all that I looked at from different companies. Now to my mind I asked myself why were they being sold second hand? there nust be a good reason, which gave me doubts.
So being a bit fussy with my gear I decide not to go for someone elses throw outs also the cost of around £1000 for used I thought was a bit steep and the risk of getting a bd one diidn't justify getiing one.
So the version I have just bought should be ok for birds-animals- butterflies etc and those that are a bit further away. As I said I looked at vertually every youtube video there is to get others viewpoints.

Now have wait and see how good it actually is when it comes. The boss says I have to get rid of some of my Nikon gear as well to help pay for the purchase so that will be the next step on here to see if anyone is interested.

FWIW, I have that lens and I'm really happy with it. Hope you enjoy it too.

I like using my 100-300mm, it's been out a lot lately, but back on my 100-400mm last weekend and it does make a difference, but as you say you have to reckon on the cost and my 2nd hand wasn't cheap at around £750, but I certainly don't regret it. Best of luck with the 100-300mm hope you have fun and enjoy the results.

Hi guys

Here's a pic of a perfectly respectable bit of gear for street type walkabouts:

The card shows how tiny it is

GX800 + 42.5mm f/1.7

It's a lot of fun, not really a one handed set-up like my Ricoh GR3x, but you can hide it in two hands down at waist level. Many purists will tell you 85 equiv is not for street. but I like a challenge. ;)

I hope to get back into doing more photos. Here's one I took yesterday in Westfield London:

Well the panasonic 100-300mm lens just arrived very late this afternooon. No real chance to try it out. Did manage to get a shot at one of our apple tree buds in breeze.

need to have more practise under better conditions

Hi Malcom
I note you are back from Botswana (Pangolin)? Did you enjoy it?
I am already looking at booking their long stay special deal for the beginning in 2025. I can't stand the cold weather here and it is a great "all inclusive " break with decent photo opportunities thrown in!. It would be my fourth visit but who's counting.

Thanks for showing that.

I thought that Panasonic had dropped the "tiny M43" concept when they discontinued the GM5. The GX800 isn't quite as "hen's teeth" as the GM5 but there don't seem to be that many around, which is always a good sign! ;)

They must be one of the top, if not the top tour operators.
Though I lived most of my life in that part of the world, never had much interest in it, though now I look at their tours with wishful eyes :)

This probably gives the impression most have of tourist visits :) Fast forward to 4 minutes

Just been trying the 100-300 for closeups, for some reason I tried it a long while ago, then didn't use it again.

Quite pleased I tried it again, forgotten how close it focussed.

I think the OIS may be faulty, the wind is blowing hard, but it is not helping!

Hi Gordon, I had a good time, thank you, and will get around to posting some images shortly. (I've posted a few on Flickr)
Unfortunately our time at Chobe was affected by some nasty storms, particularly affecting our two booked river cruises. The game drives were fine.
The 4 days at a private reserve west of The Kruger were very good, weather and animal wise. Yet again I didn't see a leopard!
We did not use Pangolin on this occasion, but I'm trying to persuade the wife to agree to me doing a solo week later this year or early next, probably on one of their ’specials'. I want to do a specialist 'photo' safari.

Does anybody know why the Auto ISO on the G80 is restricted? Manually I can select ISO up to 25,600 manually, but Auto can only go up to 3,200. Any ideas?

My GX80 and GX9 do go automatically to 25,600. I think there's a setting in the menu to enable / disable extended ISO's. maybe have a wade through the menu and see if you can spot it. If it is there once enabled in the menu auto ISO should do it.

Try Menu> Rec> IOS Limit Set

Incidentally, I have mine set to 3200 max, you need to think twice before going any higher.

Thanks, I will take a look.

Extended ISO (see rec menu) is something a bit different. I think it only extends the bottom end, and how that works I don't know.

I've got my GX800 with me at the mo, and the lowest ISO is 200 extended to 100.

I had extended ISO on but ISO limit off. I changed the ISO limit to 25,600 and now Auto goes to 25600.
Seems counter intuitive but when you know , you know.
Thanks for the input.

You may find it useful to set the limit at 6400, at 12800 the quality is very noticeably lower on the G80, but not higher than 12800 on auto, leads to too much disappointment :)

You can always select higher manually, having to do that makes you think about the situation.

Also set the ISO to 1/3 stop increments.

I'm a fan of auto ISO as manually selecting it is just another thing to do and in doing it you might miss the moment. I'm also a fan of having whatever the max is available as if you take a picture and the noise is too bad you can delete it but don't take the picture at all and, well, you've just got no picture.

I'm impressed with those. Been thinking of a macro but can't afford the Oly 90mm or the other premium lenses, but this looks pretty darn good.
Do you need to use a soft flash to get good images with this lens? And is it only available from China?

I must admit, that's the logic I lean toward.

I think there are times when shutter speed matters more than a noisy one. For some pictures at least I think I'd rather have a noisy picture than one with motion blur because the shutter speed was too slow.

100% agree. I've taken a few BIF in poor light and binned them as they were too noisy, but occasionally they don't look as bad as I expected.
If they were blurred they would all be binned regardless.

Do you have one of the new noise reduction programs Keith?

I got Denoise with an update to my CS2023. It is slow on my lap top but it does eventually do a good job.

No but I tried the de-noise on Lightroom and it took ages. I use the quick one on my free editor and just chuck a bit on sometimes.

TBH a bit of noise doesn't bother me really, I just accept it usually.

If the day comes when I capture something really special, then I would invest in de-noise to get the best from it, but that day hasn't come yet.
