I know mpbphotograhic do buy/exchange & possibly Stuart from DigitalDepot MAY do but not 100% but could be worth dropping him a line - but both are members of TP

Mifsuds in Brixham certainly do part-exchange on lenses but you may get more by selling the lens privately.

MPB price very well, an awful lot more than the likes of LCE. Probably still get more selling privately though.

Tbh I would not know what to ask for it so thought by part ex would be looking for reputable dealers that way they could also help me choose another lens

MPBPhotograhic is their trader page - chuck them a message or phone them & ask - they wont bite!!!

You'll have to contact them yourself as I'm not going to do that part for you :suspect: You will have to do some part of this yourself you know :p

Last week I enquired about PX'ing a £425 (retail price ) Nikkor, 6 months old, boxed AS NEW.

Two companies, not those mentioned, offered a derisory £175. In the end I decided to keep it and get a new body for it.

My advice is stick on here 'For Sale'

To be fair if a lens retails new at £425 how much more were you realistically expecting a dealer to offer, given that the most they'll probably be able to ask is around the £300 mark?

If you want to know about derisory offers trying selling a watch back to the likes of Watches of Switzerland - they offered me (many moons ago) £150 as a trade infor a Breitling that cost £1200 from them nine months before and which later sold on Ebay for £850 :bonk:

I enquired about swapping my Canon 120-300mm and 1.4 and 2 Tc's for the Nikon versions in LCE. They wanted £740 to swap! Give MPB a shout and that will give you a ballpark figure but as mentioned you should get more selling private.

I have rung a company up ( not naming) and I was offered a choice of either in a straight swap deal either a tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 di ld macro £89.00

Or a nikon af 70-300mm f/4-5.6g at £79.00

I asked which one would be best and he said the tamron now my lens is a nikon dx 55-200mm it's a vr model and boxed so would that be a fair swap ?.

Personally, I'd rather have the lens you already own.......

General rule-of-thumb for trade-in is that you should expect about half the new price if the item is close to mint. The dealer has to pay VAT on the profit (not the whole of the sale price), has to make allowance for repairs under warranty and needs a bit of profit on top to make it worth while. I work in a retail shop, not photographic but similar enough in what we do that I know how it works.

To clear up a slight misunderstanding there, under the margin scheme VAT is payable on the difference between the purchase cost and the selling price, not on the profit.

Your always going to get lower than trade price in PX, a retailer has to in order to make money, if they offer a warranty with the lens they will likely offer you less as they also have to cover the prospective cost of honouring that warranty and they have no such warranty with us when they take it in PX.

It's always better to sell either on here or somewhere else if you can, you'll get more for it.
