I recently went to Patong boxing stadium in Phuket, paid for a front row ticket, and hoped they'd let me use my 1dx2 with a 70-200/16-35 combo. As it happened nobody said a word - was very photography friendly. No flash though, using ambient lighting only, and it wasn't great! Pushed up the ISO, and kept the aperture at 2.8 to get a few decent shots, as shown below. I have to say it's not as theatrical as I expected, and does appear to be quite 'genuine'.

Yes - I chose 10k ISO to try and keep the shutter speed up and over 1/1000th of a second... It was dim in there :)

The Muay Thai fights seem to happen all over the country - so I'm sure you'll get the chance... The tickets are not that expensive (although expensive on local standards) so if you can get the front row - go for it....

You're right - I didn't want to use flash - I wanted to keep it as natural as possible, and with the thing flashing all the time - they might have gotten me into the ring instead :)
 
Wow, some superb shots there, in fact a lot to look at in all of them , great set, sweat, action ,blood and some real expressions in there.
