I'm considering buying a netbook and getting payg mobile broadband for use when out and about. What is the best deal? As far as surfing the net, it will probably just be used mainly for getting TV coverage of BTCC races and running two different webpages simultaneously, so main use could be two days a month for roughly 3hrs in all on each day. What do I need to look for. Is no.9 in this lot a good deal/suitable?

I bought a PAYG mobile broadband from BT last Autumn.
Works a treat; some locations gave me better transfer rates than my broadband at home.
Not enough signal for it to work at home, but that's OK.

However, I no longer use it as the small print caught me out.
The bundles I can buy are time expired - and they only last a month.
The smallest bundle you can but is about a tenner.
Hence PAYG is about as pricey as a contract and blimmin expensive for the small amount of mobile usage I need !!!!

i have one from T-Mobile, £30 for the dongle and sim, then i can choose a pre paid usage from my credit, either £2 for a day £7 for a week or £15 for a month. Not sure what the limit is on upload/download but i havent exceeded it :D

Edit

The credit on T-Mobile appears not to have an expiry period either, or it lasts at least 3 months

Just looked at your link and I see the BT T&Cs are comparable with the rest.

Note: my dongle looks exactly like a black version of the Vodaphone dongle in that list and my dongle uses the Vodaphone network.
They don't list time expiry in their top-up summary but I'd check the small print thoroughly.

I just bought a pre-paid dongle from 3 (used to work for em so can get a discount).

12GB....and it last for 12 months...so no messing around with credit expiring. When it runs out I'll just get another 12-month one.

I've got an O2 one you buy usage per day/week/month and you have a usage limit for that time frame. The day one is £2/500MB I think.

I think it's worth mentioning that if you've never used mobile broadband before then it's worth checking out coverage before settling on a provider. That's quite difficult with mobile as in theory you could be anywhere. But at least have a look around at places you might be.

Three have the best coverage, but it's still very patchy. When it works it's great, but some locations I still find it rubbish despite the coverage checkers saying otherwise. I've got an O2 one as well, but still not really given it a proper trial.

If it were me, I'd try and get a cheap unlocked dongle and get payg sims from a few providers to cover all bases. The O2 one I acquired recently was unlocked out of the box and only cost ten quid. This was from an O2 shop.

Anyone using the new Three MiFi unit?

Tempted to get one of these to save having a dongle sticking out the side of my MacBook. The Three network seems to get some good reviews too.

Well I bit the bullet in the end and bought a Three MiFi unit. Paid £100 and that was for the device itself and also 12G worth of data. The thing that sold it to me was there is a 12 month expiry on the data whereas others only have a 30 day window, so for the occasions like today when I am in London for a few days this will come in quite handy.

In a building right outside Euston Station and just did a quick speed test, results below if anyone is interested.

I use a vodafone one mainly because it is not time limited. (do check because I believe this may have changed) works for what I want. occasional use both for work and personal use.
