I'm trying to pay someone by Paypal gift. Whilst I've used Paypal for years I've never used the gift facility.
i've logged in, chose "Personal", clicked the "gift" and tried to send £55. There's a charge of £2.07 and it offers me the option of paying this myself or electing the seller to pay.:bonk:
I thought the whole idea in "gift" is that it's free.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The idea of gift is they do not pay the fee, Paypal need to make money off one of you and so your recipient receives all the money you pay the fee.
 
If you're funding the gift with a card then there's a fee if I remember rightly, if it's done by the balance in your account it's free.

It'll be in the fees explained bit of their help pages.

Remember though there's no come back if you're using it to pay for goods, PayPal will wash their hands of you if the seller walks off with the cash.

Never paid anything on the few PPG's I've done and all funds came directly from bank funding.
 
Unless your buying somethink off ebay then paypal are pretty pointless, expensive and usless with a louzy customer service support structure!
 
To summarise what everyone else has said. If using "gift", then there are no fees if you fund the payment from a balance on your paypal account or by bank transfer. If you fund it by credit card, the normal paypal fees apply, but you get the option to pay them instead of the recipient.

It seems unlikely that paypal would be willling to pay the 1.8% or so the credit card companies charge to give you a free service. If they were I'd keep sending myself "gifts" to get points on my John Lewis card for John Lewis vouchers ;)
