I have a problem with my pc in that when I shut it down, it doesn't stay shutdown, it just restarts again. It also turns itself on if i accidentially click the mouse. I have to shutdown the computer and switch it off with the main power button which is annoying. However someone mentioned that it may be down to the bios power settings, that said, after checking bios i didnt see any obvious options to fix this and i don't want to go disabling things in bios if I don't know what they are. Any help?

A bit more information is needed.

What OS are you using?

What is the make and model of your computer?

Have you installed any software recently?

Have you experienced any other problems recently with your computer?

Have you been messing around with the assignment of what the various power buttons/options do?

I am using Windows vista x64 home edition (also did the same on x32 professional) The pc is custom built so not packard bell or anything like that. The mouse is usb powered I have had a few of them and the same thing happens. I havent had any other real problems, yet on very rare occasions when booting up i get an overclock faliure press f1 to go to settings or press f2 to load default settings. This only happens 2/5 times on booting.

Is your pc closing down in Hibernation mode?

I know some motherboards also allow wake up on mouse or keyboard press and given the error about overclock failure is there a chance there have been changes made in the bios which has triggered this feature?

I've set the shutdown button to sleep on one of my PC so it's never really off, also there is a BIOS setting that lets you set the PSU button to "1 sec sleep" or "4 sec off"

also there is a BIOS setting that lets you set the PSU button to "1 sec sleep" or "4 sec off"

I have checked all of my power options, I have switched off all hybernation and sleep settings, and it is assigned to shutdown when the shutdown option is clicked. Also as i dont tend to mess with bios or dos I haven't actually changed anything in there.

Find out how to get in to your BIOS and check the settings there. Within there are various options to instigate an auto start-up.

yeah as i said earlier i did check my bios but I couldnt find anything obvious for the pc restarting, there probably is something there for it but it may have been an option not labelled very well and i dont want to change too much in bios as I could end up messing with the wrong things

It should be fairly easy to find anything. There are differences in the BIOS between PCs but using mine as an example I have a Power Management page and on it there are settings to Power On By Mouse, Power On By Keyboard, Power On By Ring [old modems I think], and something called PME Event Wakeup [no idea]. You may also see something like Wake On.....

It's not unknown for things to randomly change. Just have a snoop around. You can't do much damage. If you do change anything then don't forget to save the change before exiting the bios.
