I've been looking for a camera strap for quite a while that is quick to remove/connect and has very smaller connectors that stay on the camera as I rarely use a strap.

Whilst looking for reviews of the Peak Design Leash I came across this f-stoppers blog.

https://fstoppers.com/originals/why...ved-me-when-my-peak-design-strap-failed-59094

First I thought 'what if they wear and the same happens to my camera' but after reading the comments by others it felt like the whole Blackrapid unscrewing themselves problem and users not checking the connector.

Further down the comments was a reply from Peter Dering, co-founder of Peak Design who replied to the issues. It would seem the anchors do wear but they now have version 3 anchors that show wear by colour coding. It as seems Peak Designs replaced the anchors free of charge if they have started wearing.

Off to purchase one of theses straps as they seem to be what I'm looking for. Would like to hear the opinions of other uses and hopefully make someone aware of the fraying issue before there camera drops to the floor.

Peters reply in the comments:

Hi Everyone,

Peter Dering here, the founder of Peak Design and co-inventor of the Anchor Link system. First off…I’d like to thank those in the comment string here who have come to our defense. We owe our company’s success to our loyal supporters, and it is deeply felt and appreciated.

But…when a story like this breaks, we can't blame the messenger…we take full responsibility. Fstoppers have done a wonderful job telling the world about our products when they’ve come out. Telling the world about their failures is simply fair and honest journalism, which we hold in high regard.

In my view, there are two issues here Peak Design needs to address. First off, we had a product failure. Secondly, we had a customer service failure and a policy discussion on our hands. Insurance is an interesting topic, but is outside our expertise or right to comment on.

Apologies for the forthcoming novela - there's just a lot I'd like to address...

Product Failure: Here's the history behind all this...

1. We've upgraded our Anchor design 2 (soon to be 3) times. The Kevlar/Delrin connectors that broke on Thomas’ strap are v1 Anchors, launched at the end of 2012. This is indicated by the old logo on them.

2. We heard about the first Anchor breakage in early 2014. We paid close attention to the issue and worked closely with the customer who experienced it. We previously thought the system would stand the test of time no matter what. This incident made it clear that Anchors were subject to wear in certain use cases.

3. This realization prompted three actions:
a) We immediately put warning tags directly on Anchors, so that everyone using these products would know that these are a “wear item”, that could require eventual replacement. We were able to get this warning into the product stream quickly.
b) We wrote a blog post and help article (http://support.peakdesign.com/hc/en-us/articles/203702175-Anchor-Strengt...) about the need to check Anchors for wear, and implored people to do so.
c) We re-examined high performance cords to see if there was a better option.

4. Within a month, our v2 Anchors began being produced, using Vectran instead of Kevlar. Vectran is better against UV and abrasion. As soon as we could, we inserted these new Anchors into the product stream, and began issuing free replacements to those with frayed v1 Anchors.

5. These v2 Anchors were an improvement, but not the panacea we were seeking. The material is better, but the weave of the Vectran is looser, which fought against the its abrasion resistance. We still wanted to do better.

6. We are now in production of our v3 Anchors, which are actively being inserted into all new products. At significant cost, we scrapped 50,000 Vectran Anchors so that we could switch more quickly.

7. The new Anchors are made with Dyneema…a material that has shown to be 10x stronger than Vectran and 15x stronger in Kevlar in our reciprocating and vibratory tests.

8. v3 Anchors cords consist of three layers: a black exterior, a yellow middle core, and a red inner core. They come with instructions to seek replacement when yellow shows, and immediately cease using at the first sight of red.

9. As soon as our fulfillment centers are stocked, we intend to release this news as far and wide as we can, and provide a very cost effective way of getting these v3 Anchors into the hands of those who are already using products with the Anchor Link system.

In our biased opinion, Anchor Links remain the most innovative and convenient way to connect a camera to a strap, and we are committed as a company to never stop improving on the products we have.

Customer Service Failure:

I hesitate to label this as a customer service failure, if only because it reflects poorly on our customer service manager who I have extraordinary respect for. But as I take responsibility for the failure of any of our products, I also take responsibility for the our customer service. In this case we failed to give you the service that one deserves in such a serious situation, and I'll be following up with you directly to make things right.

Peak Design has been lucky enough to see a huge uptick in the popularity of our products and the number of people using them. With that has come a huge influx of customer service needs. We have been meeting that demand by trying to create efficient systems that let us handle a large volume of issues, as typically we see most questions and issues come in waves. Broken Anchors, however, are not a common issue to be handled by a response we’ve created using ZenDesk. This issue should have been handled with extreme delicacy and personal attention, and it wasn’t.

Peak Design products are carrying the gear of about 250,000 photographers now. Certainly, we’ve had breaks in the past. Thank goodness, very few. And in most cases, I have personally engaged with customers, with the aim of learning more about the situation people were in that led to a failure, shared with them the plan for v3 Anchors, and have also paid our fair share of insurance deductibles and repair charges. These are painful discussions to have to have, but the confidence that’s rebuilt in the consumer is worth every penny.

That said, the policy we have in place is that Peak Design is not responsible for damage to equipment. We need to have this blanket policy in place, mostly to protect against fraud. The consumers’ protection against Peak Design is that if we are negligent or fraudulent….we will cease to exist far more quickly than we were born.

This community has my assurance that we will be taking steps to improve our customer service and not have this type of failure. We’ll be increasing capacity, eliminating any process based replies for something as serious as a camera drop, and making sure that we have the bandwidth to speak with everyone who wants their voice heard. These changes won’t come overnight, but by April of this year, I hope to be staffed up and ready to give the service our customers deserve.

I’d like to close with a heartfelt thanks to all of those in the community of writers, bloggers, and readers of this content. There is a whole ecosystem around photography that Peak Design is pleased and humbled to be a part of. Thanks for your efforts, and your enthusiasm.

I have a leash and it's pretty good although the strap is narrow so I wouldn't want to carry a heavy camera with it as shoulder comfort wouldn't be great, in fact I wouldn't carry anything heavier than my Oly EM10 on it. For a heavier camera look at the slide.

The width of the strap is what interests me as I want something small and easily storable in the camera bag. I'm going to be using it with a nikon d750 and 24-120 f4.

It's only about 2cm wide which is actually quite narrow, I wouldn't use it with my EM1 and any of the pro lenses. Definitely not with my D610, its way too narrow.

What I like about the strap and fixings is that it is very flexible and always basically falls straight down and out of the way as opposed to most straps that generally get in the way when not in use.

Rob there was a thread a while ago about the leash and it was advised to get a Slide for DSLR, as Ned is saying.

My misses bought me one (slide) but it was the version1 which theres been problems with and I haven't got round to searching for a V2 as Premier Ink were out of stock. The Summitt ones I wasn't sure on, so I have held off.

Is the problem with version 1 the anchors? I think Peak Design may send you out replacements if you contact them.

I'm currently deciding if the slide is the one to get or just the connectors to adapt any strap if already have.

Rob as it was the version1 of the slide she got me, we sent it back for a refund. I read the problems you have linked and there was another one where there was failure so I haven't bothered looking since. There was also a Youtube video, which I think @twist linked, but I can't seem to find it now. I think it may have been on the D750 thread?

I've got the Slide and Clutch on my D750 and I love them. The slide is made from a padded seatbelt like webbing, really comfortable and folds up really small if you want to chuck it in a bag.

Can't comment on the 'leash' but I use the slide on a gripped D300s, a D300 and a D7200. The straps are comfortable (soft to the touch) and light. Easy to attach/detach which is really appreciated when using a tripod in the middle of a stream or among people. Can't see any signs of wear on any of the anchors (they are supplied with spares too). Squash up fairly small in a pocket or bag when not on the camera. You can keep the strap over your shoulder when you take the camera off it by using one of the spare anchors which I've found useful when paddling up drains.

I use the Slide and Clutch on a D810 with 24-70 and find it very comfortable for all day use. The anchors are quick and easy to attach and it is clear that they have engaged correctly. As recommended the only checks I make are that the allen bolt for the base is secure (they provide a small allen key that is permanently attached to my house keys) and that there are no signs of wear from the anchors. Chose this over the other popular options as the attachment points can be chosen by you based on which side is comfortable, and it works well with the hand strap - highly recommended.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm swaying towards the slide now as it's seems the best for the weight I'm thing of carrying and it sounds much more comfortable than the OEM strap.

I'd definitely agree with that - much more comfortable and can be very easily adjusted in terms of length to make it more usable!

The problem was with the manufacturing process for the clip connector for the first version of the slide where the anchor could pop if not secured in a specific way.

Looking at the slide as alternative to the BR. Like the look of the clip system.

I have one of the original narrow ones, and I do use it on my 5D3 but mainly as a backup when the camera is attached to a tripod or when it has the smaller lenses on it (including the 24-70 2.8 - so not THAT small). I also use a black rapid, but that is a pain if I think I am going to be using my tripod. I once found myself out and about without a strap so I like to keep the Peak one in my camera bag at all times.

I also have a second original one that I am now using on my Olympus OMD M5ii. As I never seem to disconnect this one and the connectors can get under your fingers a bit, I may replace this one.

So far neither of mine are showing signs of wear and I have had them for a while. I agree the narrowness is not ideal with a lot of weight and wouldn't want to use it unless over a coat to give a bit of padding.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm currently looking for the slide that comes with the updated dyneema anchors but I can't find anywhere that sells them. I think I may have to go with the summit as they come with that one. I feel that if I'm paying full price then I want to go with the newer updated anchors than an older version Peak Design have stopped using.

Just reading about the dyneema anchors on the website - do look much stronger.

Can't you just buy direct from PD? I bought mine direct earlier in the year.

Got to look out for import duties if buying direct to ship to UK.

Try premier Ink, they seem to have up to date stock, I ordered my clutch V2 (Dyneema) yesterday.

They don't have the newer Slide version. My misses ordered me one and they were only stocking V1, the slide 2 hasn't been showing as stock since early November. I wasn't sure on the Summitt so haven't bothered since.

Looking at the Slide V2 they are showing as out of stock. Look at the top right corner of page where there's the option to add to basket. My misses bought me one (v1) at the end of October for my birthday early November and they have been out since then. I contacted them for my return and they said they were un-sure when new version was coming in. > http://www.premier-ink.co.uk/photog...sign-slide-camera-strap-version-2-p-9560.html

From another thread on here a few weeks ago the leash was more for CSC type cameras and the Slide for DSLR. The leash has a narrower web than the slide and would be un-comfortable for a DSLR. And the reason I went for the slide, plus strength concerns.

Due to some concerns and they are still working on a new anchor system? PI couldn't give me an definite answer, so I have held off. Probably wont bother until the Spring after my shoulder and elbow op's.

I seem to recall a V3 spoken of, with colour coded chord to tell you the level of fraying. I cant be bothered to wait, if mine fray they will replace them under warranty with the latest type for free anyway.

That I did not know... but do now!

I emailed them before I ordered and they said they have a warehouse in London and if the items are in stock they dispatch from there. I'm not sure whether if they didn't have them in stock, they'd dispatch them directly from an international warehouse, or via London though.

I have a clutch and a slide. The slide strap is brilliant, long and works well for me slung across my body. The clutch is on all the time and I add the slide as needed, but that means the anchor point is shared with the clutch strap through the camera body. One of the positives for the system to me is the easy replacement of the only part that wears, although I've not had to yet. You get spare anchor points with the items also.
Only downside is the base plate isn't compatible with my manfrotto tripods so I have to removed the base plate when using one (rarely). I keep meaning to mod a manfrotto baseplate so I can add an anchor point.
