Pedal Power Thread

Oh dear, I seem to have inadvertently slipped and purchased a Cyclocross Bike... I've been thinking for a while that i've been totally "overbiked" for anything offroad around home with the MTB - seeing as it was built to survive the 28stone version of me from 2 years ago hooning down Peak District descents... total overkill (not to mention being about 10lb too heavy) for riding around bridleways and the occasional towpath or sustrans route...

So, I just ordered one of these...

I'm thinking for the summer, it'll be my "mixed route" ride - bit of road, bit of towpath, across the occasional golfcourse... then in winter, stick some Vittoria Open Corsa Pave CG'ss on it, set of 'guards and ride it as a winter hack.

And just under the threshold for the Cycle to work scheme :)

"As some of you may know, Martyn Ashton crashed heavily whilst performing on the Animal WD-40 Action Sports Tour at the Silverstone MotoGP. Martyn was looked after expertly by all at Silverstone and then air-lifted to Coventry. He is in typically good spirits, especially as he and his son managed to catch the overtake on the last corner by race winner, Jorge Lorenzo, on Marc Marquez in the amazing MotoGP race!

Martyn is expected to be moved to a specialist spinal centre very soon. He has asked us to thank everyone for their kind messages and we will keep you all posted on how things progress.
"

Martyn was the guy that did the road bike party vid towards the start of this thread..

Get well soon Martyn.. :(

That is lush:love: ;always liked the look of cross bikes;

Mmmm, wonder if I can convert my Trek hybrid into a cross style:thinking::thinking: .It already has Mavic disc rims;some light forks, and drop bars:cool:

am planning an early cycle to central london tomorrow.
am thinking about Chelsea.
anyone up for a meet/coffee ? :)

had an accident on way home from Chelsea...

around 15mins away from home...
kid on a scooter came from pavement to road 10-15meters in front of me when I was doing around 25mph

I shouted but kid not even raised his head up. he was going towards me.

in last milisecond, I forced bike to the side as full impact on a small kid could do a lot of harm...
so I fell...

screaming from pain raised my head up and kid with mother were not there... she took him back to the shop from which they came out from...

I am all brusied and scratched on both knees - right one is far more worse
left hand lost some skin and wrist will hurt once adrenaline wears off...
slowly right shoulder is getting painful .

but what I am most ****ed of is damage to the bike..rear derailleur is bent and not sure if it is only matter of adjusting - I think it is not and will need replacing..
saddle has some leather peeled off...

now you might ask what happened to the kid..
not much...
I was coming back from paramedics ( I was close to marathon route and they had paramedics there) and I have seen this kid...with tiny plaster on his elbow...

they not even went out to see if I am in one piece...

had to catch train back home...

as you can imagine I am fuming...
and I am going to do 52miles on next Sunday...if I dont get bike ready, then I will get my other halfs hybrid...
not sure if my wrist will be fine by then...

Sorry to hear you've had an "off" :(

The kids parents should take responsibility for this, what if you'd have been a motorcycle or a car !!!

Re the bike, the derailleur hanger is a sacrificial part which is designed to deform in the event of impact to save the frame and the mech. They're usually quite cheap to replace.

It looks like the hanger has done exactly what it's designed to do. It's taken the impact and kept your more expensive components safe. Have a look on http://gearmechhanger.com/ for you bike model's replacement hanger. It should only take you a few minutes to pop the old one off and screw a replacement back in. It's a very easy job. You'll probably have to adjust the alignment of your derailleur, which can be a tricky task until you get to grips with the technique for it.

Glad it's nothing more than a few superficial wounds. I hope you recover quickly!

thanks guys!!
Will look for hanger.
wrist is painful, and will be like that for a longer while...I do hope it will get better until Sunday and race...

is there a difference between hanger external fir and internal fit ?
ribble has both for my frame

i would imagine internal would be on the inside of the frame (i.e. wheel side)?

which side has the recess for the hanger?

so mine would be external.
need to send them an email as both are for my frame...

Bummer Lukas, hope you and the bike recover before next week. I had such a miserable hangover today I couldn't have gone near a bike!

My captain from rowing club said that I could use his winter ribble if I cant fix mine on time :)

(y) Good stuff! Hope you are feeling ok today, often seems to get worse a few days after before getting better.

A bit of cold today and a bit rain = significant drop in number of people cycling :) Expect that to continue nicely as the weather turns. must admit though was a bit nippy at the start.

Over the weekend a friend and I did a sponsored ride from Edinburgh to York.
200miles, 21 hours, 3 punctures, 1 off. (punctures and off were all my mate, not me)
Pretty tough going as it was into a head wind all the way and the directions we had weren't great in places.

I'm pretty sore today, especially the inside of my right knee which was really hurting for most of the second day - it's starting to loosen up now though.

In total we raised over £3000 for a local children's hospice where my cycling buddy's baby son spent his last days earlier this year.

Congratulations, that's a fantastic effort for a good cause

Cracking effort, always think of those worse off when I am having a moment of thinking of giving up.
Think how many people would love to be able to do what I will be doing and stop being negative.

(y) I can vouch for the headwind - I was out yesterday and the last 45km chunk of my ride from Bishopsthorpe (just south of York for people who don't know God's own county properly!) back home was definitely into the teeth of it...

Thanks chaps. It was hard work (I'm glad it wasn't just me imagining the headwind!) but definitely for a good cause. I was really surprised at how hard the mental aspect was - when you're riding for that long the only thing you can think about is pedalling, how many miles you've done, how many miles are left, how many miles to the next town, is this pain in my knee going to get any better, I hope there isn't another hill round this corner... It was really really hard to think about anything other than cycling!

I just checked out your ride on Strava - that's an impressive bit of riding!!

it's my typical "billy no mates" Sunday ride tbh - anything much longer and I reach my threshold of attention span, and end up either talking to myself or just turning in junk-miles... I'd probably get a bit further afield if I was riding in company, but on my own, somehow I don't have the heart for it anymore

I think it is the case...wrist is better but still can't squeeze or lift.
Last night found another bruise on my shoulder and now whole shoulder starts to ache

Hi all

Just joined up and keen to see what people are up to on their mountain bikes. I got into it late in 2011 but thoroughly enjoying it. I currently ride a Canyon Nerve XC full susser

Rode the SDW last month, very tough 100 miles over 2 days. I think next time I make it 3 and enjoy the pubs on route more

Off down the bike shop soon, get front mech tweaked after service (when on big ring at front getting chain rubbing against mech in some gears) go for a lap or two round Richmond park and then out will be race numbers on ready for Duathlon on Sunday.
If anybody down there my race number is 3584
