Pedal Power Thread

Exactly as Mark says, an MTB has a comparatively more upright position so most of your weight goes through your bum. On a road bike you weight is a little more forward and goes through your arms.

Assuming your bike fits you then some nice gel padded gloves, a sensible grip (not trying to choke the bars) and a few hours in the saddle to get used to the different position should be all it takes. If that's not enough then gel inserts under the bar tap can help, as can raising the stem with a few spacers if you have any spare height in the steerer tube.

I noticed a while ago that my left hand was mysteriously going numb after about an hour (15 miles or so at my pace). I'd changed nothing with my bike setup and I'd worn these gloves for a year. After a few rides with this problem I realised if I undid the velcro strap of my glove it was significantly relieved and that if I removed the glove it was gone entirely. I'd only gone and shrunk one of my gloves in the wash

After about two weeks of riding without gloves a stray bramble branch protruding several feet from the rest of the hedgerow managed to wrap itself around completely around my left wrist and then tear itself away as it got pulled tight leaving me with rather impressive scratches around the whole of my wrist

Moral of the story: Sometimes you just can't win

amen to that. my summer gloves are pretty thin and when we had that really sunny patch with a sprinkle of rain the local bridleways exploded with brambles and stingers. cue looking like id been self harming.

:bonk:

I've made it a habit since I started riding a lot to wear full length gloves regardless of the weather because road rash on the hands is a horrible experience. I thought I could get away with a couple of weeks of not wearing them whilst I bothered to find some nice replacements but apparently I was wrong. It was during the hot spell too, so no jumpers or sleeves to hide the damage. Cue some strange looks!

Nanoflex bibknickers arrived along with my ss gabba. All I need now are some winter boots and I am ready for winter, commuting and longer distance.

Winter is coming.

I work in the railway industry, and have to cross a pedestrian level crossing to get to my house, and so cases like this really scare me. As someone who has been 4feet away from a train travelling at 100mph it's not an overly pleasant experience. She got very very lucky in this instance and was very very very stupid to have even considered it, no matter how late she probably was!

What gets me is she doesn't look like the type of person that was trying to shave minutes and seconds off her journey time so what possessed her to cycle beyond the barrier and assume she wouldn't intervene the path of an on coming train!!!

Like the exit camera right though, probably away to check her own pants.

Was it the 2nd train to come through the crossing whilst the barriers were down? It's not uncommon for people to see a train go past and then assume that it must be safe... and then another train comes flying past!

She said she was "surprised" to see Mr Pontin and his girlfriend suddenly coming towards her as she rounded the curve in the road, but felt they still had enough room to get past.

"I don't know why I didn't see them," she said.

"I had to make a decision of what to do. I felt the safest decision was to continue straight ahead because they were in single file.

"If I had been concerned, I would have stopped suddenly."

She's been found not guilty after three hours of deliberations.

Am I the only one to think it beggars belief that someone can be found not guilty having overtaken on a bend at 40-50mph without being able to clearly see? Cyclists don't just suddenly emerge! It's also one of the first times the comments on the Daily Mail have pleasantly surprised me rather than making me doubt humanity. What a tragic case and, in my opinion from the evidence at hand, a terrible verdict :shake:

I wonder if the outcome would have been the same if she was a cleaner on minimum wage?

without actually knowing the true facts and listening to the evidence you can't really make comment - although TBF I'd be bias towards her because she is a medic but not in a good way

As Poah says, without hearing the case in full it is hard to tell - I was not actually clear from the article if she had definitely hit her. However, if you hit a car travelling in the opposite direction in these circumstances I wonder if it would be seen differently in people's minds.

Pretty sad all round either way. :(

bought one of these - monarch RC3 plus - to try due to it being **** loads lighter than my coil shock :D

Did a nice 90km ride yesterday, would have been better but the 1.9km swim and 21km run are taking their toll on me today!!

Well decided new tires were the order of the day (rear one bald in 3 places).

Got myself a pair of Continental travel contact. Should make a huge difference over the Schwalbe rapid robs :D

That's the kind of training ride I need to start doing. 2500cal. Need a road bike first as mtb won't cut it for that kinda distance.

Anyone know of a road bike going cheap?

if you're in surrey or sussex then I might be able to help

:rules: classifieds :bat:

Nice ride! I have my first Audax next Sunday. 106km and apparently 1200m of climbing. Should be fun! I hear there is cake.

Good luck :) I'm still fighting with wrists..

I have a 2013 Specialized Rockhopper Pro 29er. Have been pondering for ages about different tyres for mainly tarmac/commuting use but also useful for trails. Decided to fit Schwable Big Apple tyres, and what a difference they make! Fantastic on the road and really grippy. Highly recommended.(y)

Thanks Lukas. Might be worth getting yourself checked out. My shoulder is only just better after getting knocked off back in July.

Keep on forgetting to go to gp...

Well what a bitch it was to get the conti's on the rims. The air was positively blue at one point!
Still they are on and what a difference, worth the agro.

Just enjoying the last of the good weather this morning. Really need to fit my mudguards and good brakes before it gets wintery out there.

yeah - it's looking bad tomorrow up here - think last forecast I saw for tomorrow was 4c and gale force winds!

Looks good here until Friday and then it gets wet and colder. The forecast for my first Audax is wet and 12 degrees. Should allow full deployment of castelli wet weather gear though! ;)

lol, you and your castelli gear really should go and get a room ;)

[castelli_tifosi] That's because it's blimmin fantastic! [/castelli_tifosi]

Watching the spring classics this year convinced me - the number of Pro riders wearing de-badged Castelli Gabba's under (and occasionally over) their sponsored kit was amazing...
