Hi, currently refurbishing a Pentax ME Super, I have fixed some issues with the Manual Exp buttons and Exp Comp dial and am now changing the light seals, a test roll showed no leaks but they are disintegrating. Inside the mirror box there is a small strip of foam that needs removing as it is also crumbling away, problem is I can't see what purpose it serves and therefore should it be replaced. Common sense says it must be there for a reason, but it escapes me. Any ideas?

How daft am I?? it was obvious when you think about it ( which I didn't ) I had light entry firmly in my thoughts. Just done a test on 'B' and it's exactly what you say. Thanks Gramps.

What Gramps said, it’s the mirror damper foam.

Another point to bear in mind is that when it's disintegrating, the mirror pounds the pieces of foam into the focussing screen. This is especially annoying if you happen to be using a 5 frames/second motordrive on your camera for the first time in a while, as I found out a few years ago.
