No
I've not really shot many people (with my DSLR:D) so was after some advice

I'm going to a war weekend themed event and want to shoot some of the re enacters doing the war games and also some portrait type candids out and about the town

My lens choice is
10-20mm f4-5.4
35mm prime
17-50mm f2.8
70-300mm f4-5.4

I was thinking the 70-300 so I don't have to get in people's faces so much and also have the reach for the war games shots?

Also what auto focus modes would be best?

The lens has VC so what sort of shutter speeds will I get away with on average?

Apologies for the numpty questions but I do landscapes!!

you'll get some great action shots with the 70-300 close up and personal if the light is good
if it's not, then it'll be trickier

for close up portaits the 17-50 will be great at full extension
presuming that your D7000 is a cropped sensor

also how close can you get?
some really wide shots if you can get on the 'firing line' would look great
