Perception or reality?

Yes
I know it's not reality, but there seems to be an inverse relationship between the numbers of photo opportunities I see when I have my camera with me opposed to when I don't have my camera with me - specifically whenever I don't have my camera I seem to I'm seeing potential shots everywhere...

Is it just me???

I think it's called "Sod's Law"

I think this happens to most of us at some time or another.

Last summer (2009) I saw a beautiful buzzard (or something similar) perched on the branch of a tree several times over a two month period. The branch overhung the road and as cars passed beneath the bird just totally ignored them.

Every time I drove along that road and saw the bird I cursed not having the camera with me. When I finally remembered to put the camera in the car ... no bird; and I haven't seen it since

+1 for so'd law lol

it happens me all the time, this morning in fact. the guys in work came in telling me about a massive horse standing under a tree in the field opposite work, nice morning light, frosty morning etc. just no bloody camera because my brother borrowed it last night

Definitely not! .... Get a decent compact and keep it with you

The simplest solutions are often the easiest...

I went through the same thoughts and I've just bought a canon S90 :) fits in my jacket pocket easily, has all the functions of a DSLR and more. The quality of the pics are outstanding! I've already fallen in love with it and I've only done test shots :D

Very same thing happens when I lug binoculars on a walk. They act as a deterrent to wildlife.
