Petrol heads. Who owns / drives a V8 car?

Sadly, no, not yet. I have had a few straight sixes, but I have always wanted a V8. Not a possibility at the moment, but who knows in the future maybe. I quite like the convertible Audi V8's, because they look nice and sound great. Obviously TVR's are about the ultimate British V8 IMO, just because you don't see that many and they always sound amazing.

The Rover V8. My old TVR (Chimaera) had the 5.0 variety. Brilliant sound. Best thing was that you didn't have to drive it at Mach 8 to enjoy it :)

I don't actually own a V8 but i work for Mercedes so I get to drive plenty of AMG's !!

I used to a BMW V8 and also a BMW V12 - Currently it is just two V6's. And (yeah yeah I hear the purists shudder) even the AMG on order is a petrol twin turbo V6 ....If the V8 was available on my model I would have.

I'm still very tempted by the new Mustang V8 - just need to get my wife's AMG out of the way to approach that subject for me :)

I was tempted by the Mustang too. Very nice car. Someone told me yesterday that there is a waiting list for them

Oops there goes my chance for now to get a good deal :( I hate paying list price.

I've never previously been into them, but this current RHD looks a really nice package. And great value for money.

It's Mrs Nod's (I only have a V6 Diesel) but I get to drive it as often as she does. Jaguar XK8 (X100, 4 litre). Slight shame that it's a bit quiet unless you really hoof it but until it needs a new exhaust, we can live with the refinement! It does mean that we can converse at a normal volume at 70 with the roof down.

My boss has recently picked up his new Mustang which he ordered about 5months ago. Amazing car though and sits very nicely on his driveway next to his 1965 Mustang

I used to run around in a tuned V8 LDV van does that count?

Mate of mine put a V8 in an old style mini many years ago for racing purposes, now that was lethal

You're very unlikely to get any discount, they won't even give me employee discount on the Mustang nor the Focus RS.

Petrol, one had ballistic shielding and bullet proof glass (ex royal protection van) this was the other one

Hehehe the challenge is set :)

Used to own a MG BGT V8, that was really nice but had to sell it a few years ago [emoji26]

Would love a Jensen Interceptor, or a GT40, I'm not aiming too high am I?

Had TVR Chimaera 4.0 HC with cherry bomb exhaust. The whole car was rebuilt, including engine, by Chartered Mech Eng who specialised in race engines. It never went wrong and did 0-60 in just under 5 secs. Ran out if ideas at 125 mph though (allegedly).

At approx 70 (ish) the wipers would start levitating above the windscreen. Push further and the bonnet would get all excited!!!!

Never owned a V8 but if i could it would be a Rover SD1.

Talking of diesel V8's though, if you want to give your ears a treat then listen to a Scania R620 with straight pipes.....mmm mmm!

Mine's a flat six. I might get something with the Rover V8 one day. Something will be a Land Rover 90 or a P6. I know someone who has one of the wildcat 6.0l engines in a race car, which while nominally a Rover V8 bears little relation to the ones used in TVRs and the like.

If I win the lottery I'll buy an Impala SS from HMS with an Chevrolet R07, or whatever the current generation is by then. 10,000rpm, 900bhp, naturally aspirated, two valves per cylinder, operated by pushrods :D

used to have a Rover SD1 3500 V8 many moons ago, once remember going to Santa Pod in it and seeing "Screaming Tina", a mk1 ford cortina with a SD1 engine in it, I have never heard a V8 rev like that car did.

Ive always preferred the looks of the challenger. I wonder if we'll see rhd versions of them too now dodge has noticed the waiting list for the mustang?

Fully agree with you on that one :) Challenger or even the Charger. I've always had a soft spot for the Durango as well after I hired one for 6 weeks. I wished that division was available in the UK instead of these weird little cars they did in the UK.

Im guessing now with India market booming it's worth them all considering rhd versions. Australia might be getting a rhd challenge and charger so I'd imagine we will too.

Oh that sounds interesting :) Fingers crossed ...I may finally get my General Lee...

Me

Sensible everyday car is a TVR Chimaera 400.

Previously ran a Mercedes C43 AMG

Contemplating Audi RS6.

Fleet also includes V4, V6 and V10 engines. Sadly the V12 was sold a long time ago.

Now that's just showing off ;)

RS6. Oooooo nice. Potential big bills?

That is why I'm contemplating... Car belongs to someone I know, its an early 4.2 twin turbo, quite low mileage but off the road for three years for personal reasons. Needs some expenditure to get it up and running but I'm hoping it wouldn't be too expensive to run as I can do much maintenance myself.

There is someone on the forum with an RS6. Not me, my Audi is the same bodyshell but a V6 diesel engine with camshafts made out of chocolate.

Yeh, great cars. Is that the same shape as the one in the film Layer Cake (in Avant / Estate form).

I suspect they'll become a classic.

The C5 RS6 is a classic. I have one. I think the gearbox issues are caused by two things: insufficient gearbox oil changes and the gearbox seal popping and it's not noticed. I had mine pop recently and that would lead to it weaping and losing oil. I also wonder if lots of use of Sport mode from a standstill could also be detrimental. It's far more aggressive in S mode than D. It also moderates the gearbox changes due to other sensors so anything wrong with them will lead to weird changing habits. It also t***s about in stop start traffic. It will shift up and down a bit too much I find. Other than that it's about perfect.

Cambelt and water pump will need doing. You'd probably spend about £2k on it sorting out issues I'd think at a minimum even with doing a lot of work yourself. Some jobs are engine out or front off. If you do work on it yourself you'll need the Bentley manual for it and there is also a pdf of the RS6 service manual from Audi. Tyres are also an issue as there is old knobbly that scrubs certain makes/brands so are limited in exactly what you can put on. They have to be 4 the same. Different tread depth is ok but I'd not make them too different. Rotate tyres so they wear evenly.

Does it still have the original DRC system or coil overs?

They are a few school boy mistakes with it. SAI pump gets water in it and fails and that is needed for emissions. The pollen filter seal fails so that lets water into all sorts of places. Boot lets water in through dodgy seals. The plastic coolant pipe buried in the engine that leaks so you have to get the engine out.

I'd probably get a specialist (unit 10 or MRC) to take a look and give you a list of all jobs. Then decide which ones you can realistically do yourself.

It's the kind of car where repairs will all cost £500 minimum and now and then one will cost £2k. The gearbox is £5k. You have to not wilt at big repair costs.

£1 a mile for low mileage annual use isn't far off the servicing and maintenance realistically. For higher mileages the 20 odd mpg comes into play more.

They're a joy and a pain in the arse in equal measure.

This car is due belts and also needs tyres. There are a few bodywork scrapes that would need sorting if the car were sold to the general public, but I can do all those at work after hours. The car has been garaged every night, so its not suffering from water ingress. The owner has never driven it hard, and the mileage is under 60k. It will be on its original suspension. One owner from new.

That's really interesting to read. Great car to buy if you are mechanically minded - but scares the heck out of me :)

It will still need age related items regardless of mileage.

It will let water in it if you take it out in the rain or wash it so you'd need to attend to potential leaks anyway :)

I'd recommend an expert inspection regardless. Some of the audi parts prices are eye watering for these and it's better to know in advance of what you're letting yourself in for.

I was never going to get one due to their unreliability but I dropped on one that had been owned by a mechanic and looked like it had been well looked after. I'd also been looking at Porsches but the engine problems put me off more than the chocolate gearbox did so I got the chocolate gearbox car instead...
