Hi All,

This is an old family scan and i am desperately trying to read the date on the newspaper.
Not having any success at all, Can anybody have a go crack at this please...

Had to crop the image and drop down the pixels for TP rules, so not sure this gives enough detail. I have tried sharpening, contrast tweaks, without much joy so fa.

All help appreciated.

Cheers,
Neil

Any idea of the paper?

Not enough with what there is im afraid.

Can you post it as a link to the full size image?

The only reference to the comic strip i've found is from the turn of the 20th century, so thats no help.

Just did the same google!

Can you rescan the image with a higher DPI?

Do you have the negative?

Anything else in the picture that may help?

Has to be a tabloid or a local paper, too small for the telegraph, and the bottom of the left hand page looks like classifieds to me.

it's page 7....

The second scan is of a lower resolution.

GOT IT! it's ten past two!

Is it 100% a british photo and a british newspaper

Cheers for all the responses so far, I think 1953 isnt far off, although i'm pretty sure its a few years later.

The month looks like December to me, but I could be wrong....

I've played around with the pic in CS4 & Irfanview and thought it looked like Wednesday 16th XXXX. This doesn't make sense though - if the name of the newspaper is two words long (most are), there are not enough words/numbers left for the date (day/month/year).

The layout looks like: word / word / word / number / word or year / space / word / page number.

Ok that is the layout of text as i see it. Wrong date, wrong paper name but that's the layout I reckon. Don't reckon a day of the week fits, which makes me think it is a regional weekly paper rather than a daily national.

PS. The cartoon 'Those Terrible Twins' has to be the key to tracking down the paper.

Chewy, presuming that your family were in Cardiff or S. Wales when the picture was taken, I reckon that your best resource would be here:

http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/insrv/libraries/scolar/special/hums/newspapers.html

There are plenty of clues on the page that's open, but without a better picture we are unlikely to be 100% accurate.

Get in touch with the librarian and they might be able to help; they enjoy solving puzzles almost as much as we do! :D

Looking at the TV, clock, fireplace, and other styling its somewhere between 1955 and 1964, huge gap but that's the best I can do, the TV hints at earlier rather than later, the clock looks like a bakerlite 8 day, probably a smiths from around the post war mid 1940's, given that it was common for clocks to last more than one generation I wouldn't be surprised to see the same clock on a mantelpiece for decades, in fact my gran had the same one all her life (smiths 8 day).
The glasses also date it to late 50's/early 60's as does the sweater.
His tie is also indicative of the period, thin with a small knot.

There is also what looks like a lamp cable on the left of the TV going to the top, it was common to have a lamp on the tv back then, the cable is of the cloth twisted pair design and again indicative of that period.

If I had to put money on narrowing it down I would go for the 3 yrs covering 1958-1961 myself, just based on what else I can see in the picture and the picture itself, you could help us here if you have the negative by telling us the type of negative, ie 35mm, 6x6, 6x9, 6x4.5 etc

Have googled Lucozade press advertisement 1950's, and whilst can't see that particular ad, it would appear to be slightly later than 1953 due to the style of them.

I looked into that last night - opens up an ever bigger can of worms :bonk:

My Dad has a sneaky feeling the paper is a local paper, which means either The Western Mail or The Echo, the echo was not a broadsheet style paper so the most likely.

Local I reckon is correct. South Wales Echo, Or Echo???

I think it's a local paper too.

What about XXXX Advertiser?

Echo Advertiser maybe, although, not sure it had the Advertiser word to its paper title.

Hmmmm - Not sure, think it actually makes it harder!

Will do and thanks! Was hoping to be able to take in a date to narrow it down ;)

Brilliant research and thanks so much for the effort, I think your 1958 to 1961 date is pretty spot on, its a photo of my Dads brother who tragically died of a brain haemorrhage in January 1960. We suspect this was the last photo of him in December 1959. There is a nice story around the photo's themselves which I will share later.

Yep, that makes sense, I would expect it to be late 50's

Can't you just look at the EXIF ?:naughty:
