Photo date reading help

Okay! ..... Time to spill :D ... So, what's the story?

The first word definitely ends in LY.

So its

*****LY ******** , November ** ****, Page 7
I dont think its February, there's no tail dropoff at the end of the word.

I also thought november

I suspect it's Sunday? Pictorial November 16 195*

*****LT *****IAL February 16 1958,
that's what I see when the large file is sharpened etc

I cropped to just the paper area, enlarged, sharpened, adjusted contrast, then converted to B&W and messed around with different colour filters, blue seemed to yield the best results, then zoomed in and that's what it looked like to me.

It really needs someone with access to interpolation/reconstruction software as used for number plate recognition etc.

FEb 16 1958 is Ice-T's brithday. i was wondering what happened on that date for a special edition. However would need to check the period before this date as back in those days News took so long it was Olds by the time you got it.

Could it be a local paper with a Welsh title?

It only tends to be the Welsh Language papers that would have that - although I did check first last night, as I had the same idea!

From what I can make out the first word ends in 'LY' and the second 'IAL' (possibly starting with an 'M'), but haven't sourced an National or Regional (let alone local) that fits with that yet.

I'm still claiming the month as February though, as I'm fairly sure that the first letter is 'F' and the tail of the 'Y' could be lost in pixilation.

Chewy, any chance that your father can remember which newspapers they read back then? Families tend to stick with their favourite.

I think the second word might be national, another thought it might be a trade or union paper rather than a normal daily or weekly, most papers were broad sheets in those days.

The layout, with a headline 'YOU WONDERFUL PEOPLE" and an ad for Lucozade might suggest otherwise, though.

Any stabs at the other advert?

It looks like RBIS/KBIS/RBFS to me.

Wayne- the only downside of your idea would be the amount of advertising. Did Trade/Union papers have that much, or syndicate cartoons?

Have you tried a magnifying glass/jeweller's loupe/microscope on the original neg? might give better quality than a scan.

I am definitely seeing February as the month.
I thought November at first, but on sharpening and playing with filters it's clearly Feb - in uppercase FEBRUARY - which is why the y has no tail.

Date, I'm seeing 26th, but could be 16th I suppose.

Year is too indistinct to be anything other than a guess
1958 / 1959 / 1963 ??????

For some reason I'm seeing the second word as "Memorial", which doesn't make a lot of sense either.

Some would have carried adverts to pay for them, but what ad's and how many I wouldn't know.

Thanks ever so much!

Possibly. But unlikely.

Just rang my Dad and he thinks that the paper they almost certainly read back then were local rags, as opposed to Nationals. But I have a sneaky feeling that his Mum also read a few tabloids, possibly the Mirror.

The second word looks like 'Regional or National' to me.

Not the Echo or the Western Mail, then :)

BTW, the National Museum of Wales are launching a project to digitise Welsh newspapers going back to the 18th century - launch in 2012.

Brilliant, off to Cardiff library tomorrow to see if they can help.

I think the second word might be national, another thought it might be a trade or union paper rather than a normal daily or weekly, most papers were broad sheets in those days.

Doubt it would be a Union paper, I asked my dad about the broadsheet style paper and he seems to remember the echo being the tabloid size, it has changed a few times over the years, but hopefully the library can confirm tomorrow/Sunday.

Have you tried a magnifying glass/jeweller's loupe/microscope on the original neg? might give better quality than a scan.

Kind of, tried a lightbox, with magnifying glass and its just too tiny. Dont have a microscope to hand I'm afraid.

Second word is really confusing me as well Sarah, I gutted about the year, as it's probably the least clearest of all and probably the most important, although it we could nail the paper and month/date, I could then trawl the archives!

Im seeing the 14th, you can see the vertical stroke of the 4.

Looks pretty clear from that!

Did a bit more research on the paper side and it looks as if the South Wales Echo ran a evening paper called the Evening Express, doesn't quite line up with the 'LY' thoughts though.

I'd love for you to have got to the bottom of it, but that doesn't quite feel like it's it.

Agreed
Definitely 14th from that, and I'm now even more convinced that it's February. Clearly looks like an F at the beginning of the month. Still really struggling with the year though.

To me , that enlargement looks like a 16 rather than 14.
