Yes
Up until now, I have always used Photoshop Elements for editing. I am getting a Mac in a couple of weeks, the guy in the Apple store has suggested their own software, Aperture, has anyone had any experience of this?

My initial thought is to stay with Adobe, I know it pretty well and it seems to be the the most popular.

Can anyone offer any advice on Aperture?

Cheers

Dave

Oh course they will suggest there own software, there not going to want you to spend money on other brands. I would stay with photo shop. More popular and better program. Elements 8 has been amazingly good and great value for money.

Cheers Andy, having no knowledge of Aperture at all, I wasn't sure if it was better.

I'd have a go with lightroom as thats the aperture equivelant

I use it for 90% of editing with photoshop for the rest

Lightroom/photoshop, a match made in heaven on any OS

Aperture is sluggish unless you have HEAPS of RAM

Download the Aperture trial when you have your Mac, see how you get on with it.

FWIW I did and didn't get on with it as was more used to the Lightroom way of working, so upgraded Lightroom rather than going for Aperture, but it's about hat fits in with your workflow etc.

I'm not overly familiar with lightroom either, as I understand it, are the editing features limited? Would I also require Photoshop if I had lightroom?

Cheers

Dave

Dave - you could do 99% of your editing easily in Lightroom - what I use - it also catalogues your pictures and keeps track of where they are on your disks - that feature alone is worth it! You can down load a trial for PC or MAC. I very rarely take a pic into PS now - but if you do LR sends it to PS - you edit - save - and it comes back into LR - and everything is non-destructive - so you can go back and change things later.

Cheers Andrew, I try not to have to do too much editing, mainly because I'm not that great with photoshop, so it's not like I'm doing lots of tricky stuff.

I was reading up on it there, and I think its exactly the same on the Mac as it is on the PC, so I'll download the trial, have a play with it and see, probably won't get the Mac for at least a fortnight.

Thanks

Dave

You could also have a look at BIBBLE 5 - which has just been launched - http://www.bibblelabs.com cheaper than LR and does the same sort of thing - I had B4 which I didn't like but I get a free upgrade to B5 - just downloading now - so hopefully it will be better - I'll let you know. There is also a free trial available.

I'm very much a Mac fan, been using Aperture for quite while. Love it, it'll also send stuff to PS for editing if required and save it back into Aperture. Hardly ever use that feature though. Manages libraries and does pretty much everything LR does. Tried LR but after being used to Aperture couldn't get on with it. If you've not used either before any one will be a bit of a learning curve. Well worth it though for library management alone I'd say.

Like Andrew I hardly ever go into Photoshop (I have Elements) as I can do most of what I want to do in Lightroom, Aperture has a similar featureset, it's just a case of which one you get on with best, I think Elements 8 also has an image managing element to it (although I've not used that), it's just a case of downloading the trials and see which you get on with the best (don't forget iPhoto for image management too).

For the applications available on both PC and Mac you should be able to download trials for both, so 2x 30 days ;)
