Hi,

Since starting photography I've come across allot of people who are a bit rude/unpolite. Im 21 and have only just started photography. There seems allot of slanging and competition.
No community. I've gone out and smiled at some photographers and they've just blanked me.

Even on these forums theres allot of snobby rude people who are probably brilliant photographers but they talk so rudely on the forums.

don't know if its just me, but thats what I think.
I think there should be more community.

Any photographers in the SG / MK/ CB/ PE or NN Postcodes that know any good wildlife photography spots? or even anywhere that you can get a great shot?

You get out of this life what you put in. Ignore the numpties and know-it-alls and just enjoy taking photos.

I love being behind a camera and talking about it but I find a LOT of photographers to be cork-sniffing weirdos, just like I'm a keen musician and there's loads of nutters in THAT profession.

I guess I'm saying all of life is fairly well represented!

I actually don't think many people on here are snobby and rude. I think we are are friendly lot but often advice is honest and people don't like that.

Where you based mate in am in MK.

We need a bunch of British Joe McNallys, Scott Kelbys, David duChemins, David Hobbys and their ilk around whom we can orbit and feed off their caring-sharing vibes.

I'm not kidding.

I just add them to my ignore list, it makes some threads a bit disjointed but it's worth it :)

A person with a camera is just that, a person (with a camera). Some people are nicer than others. Owning a camera is an independent variable to niceness.

There's not even any certainty that any two people with cameras will have any common interests, photography itself is a wide church fragmented in many sub-interests. And beyone that, cameras are an accessory to many non-photography hobbies.

More community is a good thing, but for life in general.. not just photography.

Anyway, PE postcodes.. what sort of wildlife did you have in mind? there's somewhere for wildlife everywhere, but it does depend what you're looking for ;)

Im just on the edge of the hertfordshire/bedfordshire border, I'm in SG but am about 15minutes from bedford.

something different, animals with nice scenery.
I've spent allot of my time walking and shooting (thats the camera type) around RSPB.

Think that you'll get attitude with any subject really no matter what it is.. There is always a +ve & -ve side to everything and there is always someone whose one or the other...

I take people as they come, yes some seem snobs and up their own A55es but thats just the way they are... Just get a bag of salt & take a pinch when the need arises...:p

Definitely the same here.

I don't understand the snobbery in photography. It's not what you have, or what you use, it's what you can create no matter how much it cost. I've found this forum amazing for advice & guidance but I've come across many rude photographers outside of Talk Photography.

Well said. I've had the same when fishing, people think that because they own a £400+ reel and a £300+ rod that they will out-fish anyone. The surprise on their face when you pull out a 17lb cod right next to them on a £50 rod is priceless but no matter what the hobby there will be snobby people who are "much better" than anybody. Such a sad fact though at the end of the day but that's how it goes.

This is probably the most friendly forum on the net  I've never seen any of the attitude that you've mentioned above, I think that you maybe confusing snobby/rude with to the point, there are many great photographers on here that are more than happy to give advise, but you have to think about if people want to take that inboard, I mean if someone posts a rubbish photo what are the people that are critiquing it supposed to say

I agree !
Have a great picture no matter what you've used to take it

I'm not there anymore but i spent five years in Mk so ones i'd suggest in no particular order are

Summerleys nature reserve near olney - the hide at the far end is particularly good for small birds

Linford lakes /hanson centre imediately north of MK

Little linford wood north of MK (run by BBOWT)

Lots of locations in Mk itself (Shenley wood, howepark wood, linford wood, linford manor, the ouse valley, the ouzel valley, walton lake, north willen lake etc)

Loads of locations arround the Nene valley at Peterbourough

Pitsford Reservoir (between MK and NN)

Coming a little further south into the HP postcodes

Dancers End BBOWT,
College lake BBOWT ,
The Tring Reservoirs (Marsworth etc)
Ashridge Estate (National Trust)

Thanks, am out tomorrow, will try one of them !

I've only been round a few RSPB walks.
Fowlmere near Royston is great !

Too true.

I started running last year and a lot of other runners say hi, give you a smile or at least acknowledge you when you pass. So you get into the habit of doing the same. However, there are a lot who don't reciprocate or even outright blank you.

Just don't lose sleep over it though.

All of life is filled with varieties of individuals. It is irrelevent what those individuals are doing, they are either pleasant or not. So those miserable specimens would be miserable whether they have a camera in their hands or riding a bike.

Life's too short to get hung up on them. Shrug your shoulders and move on. IME provided you approach people in the right way, 95% will be right back to you. Why waste sleep on 5%?

I've had the same thing happen the other week. The wife and me were out round a local park and saw a couple of guys with cameras and while one said hello, the other one just blanked us completely. Had to laugh though, the quiet one suddenly dropped to one knee very dramatically, fired a couple of shots without even checking any settings on his camera, had a chimp at it and said "well those two are going in the bin". Maybe if he'd looked at what settings he put his Sony Alpha in he might of got a decent shot. His buddy just walked away shaking his head and grinning.

I was out the other day at an RSPB walk in one of the hides, I took a shot (with my camera) and one lady turned around, looked at me and shook her head.
She wasn't a photographer, maybe if she was she'd understand that you can't 'turn the shutter noise off'.
I don't know rules for RSPB but were so far away from the actual birds that it wouldn't disturb them.
Anyone had this before?

photography is fine in RSPB hides , they just expect people to be considerate of other users so constantly machine gunning your shutter would be a bit out of order - but the occasional click is considerably less disturbing than birders pagers going off and rustling of feild guides (disturbing to users i mean - the birds can't hear you and dont care anyway)

Birders also have their less than convivial types. In another life, Mrs Y and I are cyclists. We cycled into the Titchwell Nature reserve a couple of years back. It was quite busy with cars going in and out continually. We passed by a middle aged couple when the woman said,in a voice intended to be heard, "They shouldn't allow bikes in here, they disturb the birds." I nearly fell off my bike laughing!

I can understand how the OP feels, the kind of thing he talks about is rife, although I do have to say I don't notice it so much on this Forum. I was once derided as being a Fanboy for writing a post about a Mirrorless Camera on a Mirrorless Camera Forum by the Moderator who did not own one.

But as others have said, its not confined to Photographers. I bought a small Scooter with the intention of going on day trips, Camping Trips with the local Scooter Club, they would not even let me tag along at the back because I had a Honda and they had Vespa -Lambrettas, and if you mention the word Scooter in front of a "Real" Motorcycle group they will spit on you.
JK.

This takes me back a year ago when watching a steam train chug along a local line, I'm doing nothing more than scouting the location out when someone shouted out next to us 'oi you can't stand there.' Now this was what peeved me off the most, not asking if I could move a little or whatever else. But simply stating that I 'couldnt stand there' like he was king of the footpath.
Needless to say I shouted some comments back, and the joke was on him anyway as moving further around the railway embankment I found a better spot of the entire line.

I just have to add something to this thread as it happened to me today , and last week ,last week in a hide full of birder's /photographers ,the subject was a Bittern about 40metres away and some guy with a camera in the corner was constantly giving it the shush , shush , even when youngsters were asking were is it,i can't see etc, i got a peed off with him so i just give it the shush back and seconds later all you could hear was is shutter firing away ,i just didn't get that and i actually walked out and made sure he heard my comment.....which was ,,,what a prat ,now years ago i would i would have kept that comment to myself but now i am reaching a certain age i just don't care ,now today i had a slight run in with a guy with a 500mm who basicaly took up a lot of room with all is gear on a seat that could fit 4 people on,.now i was not to bothered but it was is attitude to a couple of youngsters who wanted to have a look out and i could see thier mother looking at the chap taking up all the space as if to say that's ignorant ,now it must be my age now but i actualy said something but on this ocassion it was a polite would you mind moving your bag and photo gear up so we can have a quick look out ,i quite understand that he was set up and in a postion he wanted but to take up all the room without even saying anything when he could clearly see that he was taking up a lot of room in my opinion that was rude.....i have a 1d mkiin that is like a machine gun and very noisey but i am always aware of my surroundings and people around me and it just takes a bit of common sense of when to to fire off and when to go for single shot , i have actualy missed shots because of this but unlike some other photographers in hides i don't see it as a competion and i don't mind letting somebody else with or without a camera have a look ........On a posotive note i have met more freindly, helpfull and informative photographers /birders out thier who are only to happy to help.

I agree with the statement about people on this forum. I think it's one of the only forums in which people were outrageously rude in the first week of me being a member. I usually just reply with a far more clever comment and walk away feeling knowing I'm better than them. xD

I was photographing a carnival here in the East Midlands and found a lovely low short wall to stand on facing length ways to the subject which allowed me to get reasonably high views. Suddenly, this reasonably old women with a DSLR gets up onto the wall and stands right in front of me entirely blocking my view. Then when she decided she wanted a new view, she got her husband to keep the spot warm! I got so annoyed.

Not read all the replies but my experience is that a lot of photographers are willing to impart their knowledge and help where they can.

Some can come across very blunt but usually are giving honest and helpful feedback.

I've been lucky enough to come across some very genuine, very experienced and well respected photographers who have offered me genuine help and advice and I am very grateful to them.

There will always be people we come across that we don't get along with but so far I've found there to be a very nice, helpful community, but I do have a fairly thick skin and with a little age on my side have learned not to take things personally they are very rarely meant that way.

Couldn't have said it better myself :}

I've come across a range of wonderful photographers on this forum that have provided me with valuable advice that I couldn't have found elsewhere.

With the best will in the world I remember your opening week on this forum, and you made a number of sweeping and grossly inaccurate statements, that were rightly pointed out as incorrect  no one was rude to you they just pointed out that you were incorrect

With the highlighted part of the above quote your not exactly coming across great yourself

I understand what you mean, however alot of specialist clubs are like that and look down on anyone who doesnt fit their idea of a perfect member.

"Real" motorcycle groups spit on scooters because most never ride a scooter, they get their licence via direct access and never gain an appreciation for scooters. Also, all the teenage kids who zip around with no regard for other road users, safety or pedestrians do not help that perception. I have seen an elderly lady get clipped by a scooter because the kid thought it would be funny to ride so close to the pavement just to scare people. No doubt to impress his friends who were with him. It is that behaviour that drags other scooter and motorcycle riders down.

I for one have not had many issues on this forum, as with any communities where a large number of people congregate to share opinions and ideas there are going to be some disagreements. Simple way to deal with it, is to leave that thread and not return.

But I have also met some members on here who have been extremely helpful, pointing me in the right direction and sharing new knowledge with me. I look forward to seeing what else I will learn and gain from using this forum.

However, treat others as you would expect to be treated, if you come in all brash, rude and shooting down other peoples comments, you cannot expect people to treat you favourably in return. Its one of those old sayings that your parents used to tell you time and time again, but I feel at times, people disregard it whilst hiding behind the anonymity of the internet.

I think my comments about motorcycle groups reflect that, the actions of a few bad eggs drag down the reputation of everyone else associated.

Give it time, it is worth it

Exactly :}

I use a fair few forums and this forum is far from rude, in fact it is almost too safe for my liking but I realise it needs to cater for all and it is a very good source of info and opinion.

You should really expect people to be fairly polite if all on a forum as the aim of a forum is to join together and all get something out of it.

Walking past someone with a camera and have them ignore you is a different matter as they have not 'bought in' to having a discussion with you as they do by default on a forum.
